The odd couple. Weight Watchers and McDonalds

Well who saw this one coming?  McDonalds and Weight Watchers have partnered up.  McDonalds will be using the Weight Watchers Logo to highlight some of the chains healthier options and promote foods that have been approved by the dieting chain in New Zealand.  Unbelievably Chicken nuggets and the Filet ‘o’ Fish have made the cut.  This is a deal that is obviously going to end up upsetting some people out there.  It may be fair to say that Weight Watchers has sold out a little here by agreeing to endorse food on the McDonalds menu.  Obesity is a growing problem all over the world and especially so in western cultures.  There is no one person or group that can be easily blamed for the problem, but I imagine that this endorsement will not end up helping the problem. Aside from the health concerns here this has got to be seen as a complete marketing victory for McDonalds.  Many fast food chains have been trying to portray healthier options.  Taco Bell even starting promoting the “ Drive Thru Diet ” which lists 7 “healthy” options to choose from.   Most of this stuff if marketing shenanigans though and doesn’t really encourage healthy eating.  All of these options are just giving you tinier portions and calling it healthier.  The truth is that you will more than likely not feel fulfilled after eating any of these options and will either feel miserable or end up ordering more and defeat the entire purpose.  I don’t blame either one of these companies for making the deal.  I just hope that most people see it for what it is.  If you are dieting or trying to eat healthy these should be seen as treats and not alternatives to healthy eating

Ice Scrapers are all about Marriott Hospitality

Marriott General Manager Leah Raja said the scrapers are basically standard procedure in winter. “It’s something we do here to make the guests feel more comfortable.” Raja went on to point out that on the Wednesday evening everyone at the hotel was snowed in so the staff opened the restaurant, which is usually only opened for breakfast and hosted a Pasta Buffet for all those stranded.

Allens butchery class, Mayfair

If there’s a better afternoon to be had anywhere than hacking apart a variety of top quality meat, then I’d like to know about it. Allens of Mayfair, at 117 Mount Street – that’s just opposite the Connaught and a few doors down from Nicky Clarke hairdressers, to give you an idea of the area – run butchery classes at their stunning Victorian shop every Wednesday at 1pm and attract a remarkable variety of punters (50/50 male/female most surprisingly) keen to learn more about that mysterious journey between the fresh animal carcass and the neatly trimmed cuts on your plate. I was lucky enough to be invited to this fascinating place with a handful of other food bloggers to see how badly I could disgrace myself when let loose with a chainmail glove and a dangerously sharp knife

Gluten-free Vegan French Bread Recipe

It makes me mad when I hear relatively recently diagnosed Celiacs talk about how they haven’t had pizza or bread since diagnosis… or that when they have had it, they didn’t enjoy it. It is not that I am mad at them- far from it! No, I’m mad at a society that equates bread products with gluten, and mad at companies that create allergen-free bread completely lacking in taste or appeal that scar these poor souls so dreadfully that they vow off bread entirely

Forage (Silver lake)

A new place Forage has opened at the the happening Sunset junction area, replacing the mediocre Town and country . The concept of the place is rather interesting, they use fresh seasonal ingredients and you can even bring in your own homegrown produces to exchange for store credits.  As soon as we walked in I can tell the place is promising, seeing the delicious food displayed at the counter. Flat bread with endive and bruschetta It’s very tasty but I wish there were more bruschetta

How to take a day trip from Shanghai to Hangzhou

Shanghai is a modern metropolis, famous for its never-ending construction and towering skyscrapers.  Yet, just 180 kilometers away, lies Hangzhou , the capital of the Zhejiang province.  Culturally rich and renowned for it’s picturesque beauty, Hangzhou makes for the perfect relaxing day trip away from the hustle and bustle. Getting there The best and fastest way to get the Hangzhou is by train.  The D train , “Dong Che Zhu” departs from the South Shanghai railway station and arrives at the Hangzhou station within 1 hour and 40 minutes.  The N and T trains are slightly slower, arriving within 2 to 2 ½ hours, and the K trains are even slower.  It’s best to plan your return and buy your return ticket ahead of time, as the last finishes its run early in the evening.  After arriving at the Hangzhou train station, it’s a quick cab ride into the city. What to see Hangzhou is famous for the beautiful West Lake .  It is associated with Chinese romantic poetry and was well loved over the span of multiple dynasties.  Chinese tourists flock here to walk around the tree lined 15 kilometer circumference.  There are ten traditional scenic spots along the lake, along with ponds, springs, temples and tombs .  At one of the main entrances, you can sit down for drinks at Costa coffee and a number of other nice restaurants before starting on your walk.  Bicycles can be rented for 10 RMB per hour (with a 200 yuan deposit) and can be returned to any bike location.  Boat rides along te lake are also offered for a fee.  You will not have time to see all of the lake in one day, but you can easily spend a few hours there.

Bye Bye, Chicken Pie

Sometimes (my husband would say, often) I become obsessed with a recipe that doesn’t work, and I have to make it work, even if that means making the same thing four times and driving my family crazy discussing changes and additions. “NO,” he’ll say, calmly, “I REALLY DON’T THINK IT’S GOING TO MAKE THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE IF YOU USE SEEDLESS RASPBERRY JAM INSTEAD OF THE KIND WITH SEEDS.

Rainy Weather Snack Time

It was a hot day where I live, until it rained this afternoon. Suddenly the temperature dropped and it felt like the perfect weather for a cup of steaming Masala Chai and bowl full of Bhelpuri (pictured above)! Yum, yum! What made it perfect was that our friends were over and we ate and drank together. Nothing like sharing the good stuff with good friends.
