A commenting war of sorts is currently being hashed out in yesterday’s Sift Happens post about the NYT Prime Meats review, that has escalated into a heated debate about Brooklyn restaurants versus Manhattan restaurants, and whether one is looked upon more favorably than the other by Sam Sifton . The whole thing is worth a read, but here are two particularly inspired takes on the subject: Point : Wiliamsburg is a part of Manhattan as far as I’m concerned. It’s all about the gimmick.

If there’s one thing Iowan’s know, it’s food. We’ve been living the whole “buy local” lifestyle since before it became a foodie buzzword. It comes from our self-sustaining rural lifestyle. Another thing we know is that hard work deserves a good meal. And though few of us toil in the fields day in and day out a farm-style meal is well worth the extra calories every once in a while. When we’re craving comfort food we head to the Iowa Machine Shed Restaurant in Des Moines. With the tag line: “ A Restaurant Honoring the American Farmer ®” it’s definitely not an “upscale” sort of place; the waitstaff wear bib overalls and you’ll enjoy your drink out of a Mason jar. But the food is fresh, the portions are large enough to share and the surroundings are “down home”

Basketball fans are hungry to show support for their local sports affiliate, or at least the NBA thinks so. So the logical conclusion? Make edible team logos that can be put on a pizza , because nothing says “Go Team!” like eating a reasonable facsimile of your favorite team’s insignia

Back in March came word that ancient (by LA standards, at least) Beverly Hills mainstay Ristorante DaVinci had reopened after its 2008 shutter with a fresh new look, new Mediterranean menu, and new chef. At the stoves was/is Chef Jason Fullilove who had previously worked at Ilan Hall’s The Gorbals downtown. Around that time restaurant management made an effort to draw in bloggers to check out the updated digs and sample the new menu, but clearly those efforts didn’t prove incredibly fruitful because the eatery is listed for sale by Bizben

The Lo-Down reports that a true Lower East Side institution—the bar Max Fish on Ludlow Street—is aiming to relocate to Chrystie Street between Stanton and Rivington because of skyrocketing property taxes and high rent at its current location. Last night, though, Community Board 3 swiftly put the kabosh on the plans

Over the last year or so, many, many restaurants have opened up in downtown Manhattan with a gimmicky concept or menus that revolve around one item (see here , here , here , here , here and here for reference). Although many have done very well, received acclaim, and continue to prosper, others have been forced to either change their concept several times over to appeal to their customers ( Permanent Brunch ), or shutter completely once things didn’t work out as anticipated ( T-Poutine ). After weighing the successes and the failures, we now present a few tips for making your gimmicky downtown restaurant concept work

After years of looking a bit weedy compared to Cannes (admittedly the biggest film festival in the world), the Paris Film Festival (otherwise knows as Paris Cinéma) seems to gain strength every year. For the 2010 edition there will be some high-profile guests (Jane Fonda – now 72!, M

Todaro's Pizza in Clemson I remember back in college when I had my first stuffed piece of pizza. Let me remind you that I’m not talking about Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza, but an entire stuffed pizza. That’s a layer of pizza crust, toppings, and then another layer of crust

In a hilarious play on words, Milan was yesterday invaded by bees, with a bunch of them settling on a Vespa scooter in Piazza San Babila . The word for bee in Italian – “ape” – is also used for the little three-wheeled Piaggio trucks which were originally based on the Vespa scooter. “Vespa” means ‘wasp’ in Italian and we’re amused to find this nest of escaped bees settling on the namesake of a larger breed of similar insect

Another favorite place of mine in Northern Liberties/Fish Town is Arbol Cafe , a small Paraguay cafe owned by a very friendly couple. It’s quietly tucked away on a side street, you can have a relax afternoon here sipping Yerba Mate Tea . The warm and homely interior is lovely! The first time I was there, they just finished baking these chocolate chips cookies
