Story, video and photos by Jonathan Stumpf Reporting for West Seattle Blog If the flora south of the Admiral District appears brighter and more productive these days, you can probably thank local artist turned beekeeper Gary DeBoer. What started back in the summer of 2008 as a curiosity about the lack of honey bees in the his neighborhood has now turned into a passion to inspire others to become “a little more aware of our relationship to this spaceship we are on,” DeBoer explains. After keeping fairly detailed charts about the insect activity in his yard, he decided to join the Puget Sound Beekeeper Association and quickly launched his hobby with beginner classes and regular monthly meetings

Thanks to the tipster who let us know that what looked on 911 like a simple “motor vehicle accident” call resulted in a spill that has the Highland Park Way hill (Holden to West Marginal) shut down right now. We just verified at the scene that it’s closed at the top, and people are being turned around.

I have been having a little bit of a debate with myself on how much I should spend on resources that enable my blogging. I pay for a Flickr Pro Account (which I just renewed, that’s precisely what sparked my inner discussion), I pay for a web host to host all three of my websites, and I have been considering buying a new camera (paying as little as I can).

At the end of April 2010 I had the pleasure of attending a PR event with my good friend Airdrie for Mark’s Work Warehouse . It was a lot of fun, because we got to try a number of clothing items. While I’ve been a customer of Mark’s Work Warehouse for a while (jeans, particularly) I have to confess it never occurred to me to wear any of their dress clothes.

Design and interface Camcorder design has in many ways been massaged into oblivion: it’s hard to design a barrel-shaped camera that breaks from the template. The X100 will feel very much familiar to anyone who’s used a typical digital camcorder, but that does lead to a comfortable, easy-to-grip design.

When Frank Zappa was a teenager, he became obsessed with the daring music of Edgard Varèse. He listened to an album with the works of the European composer over and over, even though he didn’t understand the technical aspects. “I didn’t know what timbre was,” he wrote in a 1971 magazine piece titled “The Idol

As much as I prefer to cook practically everything from scratch, let’s just put it out there that I’m a realist. I am not immune to the call of convenience products, even if I don’t prefer to eat them in their native state. I’m also not immune to the call of the checkout line, and end up buying way more cooking magazines than I care to admit.

May Food Celebrations: 30th-June 2nd
photo credit: cdsessums My Mom is arriving on June 23rd and I want to make sure I have a clean apartment with everything she might need. I also want to make sure that I have gotten rid of everything I *don’t* need, so I’m spending my Sunday morning/afternoon doing spring cleaning. I am trying to set some rules as to what I’m going to get rid of (and since I have a tonne of clothes that don’t fit anymore, there’ll be a lot of clothes going to the Sally Ann or some other charity)

There has been a brouhaha growing over the recent decision by the LCBO to reject Crystal Head vodka from their store shelves. A number of people have invoked the “prohibitionist” rallying cry, or deemed the LCBO to be stupid, old fashioned curmudgeons. Well, I’m going to formalize my opinion here, since posting comments on the subject everywhere else is a tad time consuming.
