smoked salmon salad: a light dinner with serious flavor

The confluence of events that led to this recipe is random: A jar of smoked sockeye salmon I brought back from my trip to Alaska , a new workout regime that emphasized muscle-building with high-protein food, and the fact I was cooking alone after Paul left for a week-long business trip. The brain cells collided and created a vision: Arugula salad with smoked salmon, kalamata olives, chickpeas, goat cheese crumbles, and lemon vinaigrette

A Papyrus card from @kiwano’s @cecilialu and @sribeiro

photo credit: mybulldog Earlier this year I began a collaborative effort in partnership with the green marketing company Kiwano, spearheaded by my good friends Cecilia Lu and Sofia Ribeiro, both absolutely lovely women and very smart collaborators. Most of my friends have, in the past few years, taken to associate me with the hummingbird, Sofia recently gave me a card by Papyrus that totally melted my heart. Here it is: Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time carrying out hopes for love, joy and celebration.

Guest post: @HenryJue’s Ride to Conquer Cancer

I met Henry Jue on Twitter a few months ago and recently found out that he was doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer. I thought my friend Greg was also doing the RCC, but not sure. He might be doing the Underwear Affair (also a fundraiser for cancer).

Anatomy of a restaurateur: Mary Alletta Crump

Because she ran a tea room, Mary Alletta “Crumpey” Crump (pictured, age 31) actually would not have called herself a restaurateur. She made a distinction between a tea room and a restaurant: the former served light food, mainly lunch and afternoon tea, while a restaurant served heavy food and was open for dinner. Not so for The Crumperie.

Miracle Weekend (@BCCHF) for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation

This past weekend, as I was arriving to my office at The Network Hub I came across an envelope on my desk. As I unwrapped it, I realized it was a beautiful card made by one of the children at BC Children’s Hospital. My eyes welled and I proceeded to open it

Society Dining Lounge (@Glowbal_Group)

I had a chance to have lunch this past week with one of my very best friends, AF, at Society . I have previously written about or reviewed a few of the Glowbal Group restaurants, including Italian Kitchen , Coast , Afterglow , Sanafir and Glowbal Grill . My experiences with the Glowbal Group have always been very good (and just in the interest of disclosure, no, I’ve never had a complimentary meal)

Strange Supermarket Finds

After attending a weekend wedding in Florida, Joel and I returned yesterday looking to make a very light dinner after devouring hamburger cupcakes and other assorted wedding food for the last four days. We walked to the Porter Square Shaw’s in the smoky haze (thanks, Canada.) First, we went searching for veggies

Boutique blooms at the Chelsea Flower Show

Despite being about as green-fingered as a camel , I managed to wangle a ticket to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London last Thursday. Along with rainbow-coloured buds and blossoms, wacky water features and gorgeous garden paraphernalia, there was plenty to please the horticulturally challenged

Robson Sushi (Robson Street, West End)

I thought I had been to Robson Sushi before with my friend K but it turns out, I was completely mistaken. But a few weeks ago, JT and I ended up at Robson Sushi for dinner – we were just walking around and said “ hey let’s try this sushi joint we’ve never tried “

There will never be much vegetarian food. But there might be food …

The conventional wisdom in the catering industry is that there would be more vegetarian restaurants and vegetarian options if chefs and restaurateurs saw a financial incentive in it. After all, they are businesses, not social services.
