With the FIFA World Cup approaching, South Korean pop stars are joining the fun by releasing some World Cup theme songs. There are probably a dozen of those; most are just ok to be frank. Sharing just a few here… T-ara – We’re The One Probably the most theme fitting song and music video; can be pretty annoying though with the over-repetitive lyrics.

The night of June 3 saw the seventh edition of Apèritif à la Française, a celebration of the French heritage of food and drink, lifestyle and culture. The theme for this year’s festival was ‘Celebrating Conoisseurship’ and by the spread of quality cheese, chocolate, pastries and wines, it seemed that no expense had been spared to ensure that everyone who attended did indeed celebrate.

Apèritif à la Française at the Shangri-La, New Delhi
For maybe-not-so-obvious reasons, I am a lover of all things Spanish cuisine (not to be confused with Latin American cuisine, which seems to be pretty much an overarching term for foods from the Spanish-speaking countries in the southern hemisphere, and a term that might be better suited). I love chorizo, olives, capers, ham and all those strong flavors typical of Madrid’s cuisine (I was raised to love them). My good friend Jay Catalan ( The Network Hub ) had told me about Judas Goat Taberna but I had never been and after a long day of meetings, I was exhausted and the only people left at the office were Paul, Yi and Minna.

Food bloggers are often accused of a herd mentality, of obsessing over the latest fads and new openings and of flooding the blogosphere with identical reviews at the same time. Of course, when the national critics do the same , as when Bar Boulud and Roux at Parliament Square opened in the same week and every single paper contained a review of either one or the other, nobody seems to care. I’d like to think it’s because people are so used to the stunning variety and engaging, impartial comment on the best food blogs that any similarities in content stand out like a sore thumb, whereas nobody really reads the national press to find out what a restaurant is like; the actual subject matter is secondary to a good read.

I have found a new favorite stall for ice kacang in Penang and it is Jalil Special Ice Kacang. Being halal is another good thing because everyone can enjoy it. The stall is just next to Mee Sotong Hameed Pata in the food court between the huge field and Fort Cornwalis at Esplanade.

We’ve only been to Rice Avenue once, which is not a reliable sample size, but here goes… The service was good, but we both thought the food (pad thai and massaman curry) was average, and there was nothing much to differentiate the place from other Thai restaurants in the city. Also, I ordered vegan pad thai and ended up with egg in my meal, which is no fun…so be sure to specify

Our brunch this morning was roasted chicken sausages flavored with oregano, sauteed shredded cabbage, boiled egg, cucumber and lightly sauteed apple slices. This breakfast platter is adapted from Nita Mehta’s breakfast cookbook and made for a super quick, flavorful, filling, men-pleasing (my son and husband) meal. For a lunch or dinner version, you can top with some salsa and grated cheese

The Hanoi’s old quarter is known for small alleys of less than 1m wide and very long. Each alley is the home to a dozen of families who live in tight space where lacks of air and sunlight. When asked why local people don’t want to escape that life, most said that the living space is very cramped but they can easily earn a living.
