The Crisis Centre of British Columbia ( @crisiscentre on Twitter) brough to my attention this event that will take place on Friday at the Vancouver Art Gallery , the commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th). Due to my involvement in organizing Mental Health Camp, I have learned more about what can be done to prevent suicides, and how important this topic is

Square One’s Gretchen Montgomery made the announcement this morning, asking us to share this letter with you: I want to let all of my wonderful customers know that Square One Books is closing. I am greatly saddened to have to do this to our West Seattle community of booklovers who have been supporting the store for nearly 23 years.

The Jewish High Holy Days are early this year – starting with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah , tonight – and local synagogue Kol HaNeshamah is observing for the first time with its new leader, Rabbi Zari Weiss . She spoke with WSB while preparing her sermon for tonight’s service, which along with other High Holy Days celebrations will be held outside West Seattle because there’s just not enough room in their regular home – they’re co-housed with Alki UCC Church

Yesterday came word that Eleven Madison Park had dropped its $28 two course lunch and reformatted the the menu so that just ingredients, not full dish descriptions were listed . But there’s more: They also removed 34 seats, got rid of the hostess stand, and dropped the bar menu and all a la carte options, all in the hopes of transforming the restaurant “from an overachieving neighborhood restaurant into one of the world’s standard bearers of fine dining .” [NYT]

It’s that time of year again! Year after year, we love going to Taste the Future, Columbus State Community College’s fundraising event for the Hospitality program at the college – and most of the restaurants participating in the event either employ CSCC graduates or work closely with the program during their apprenticeship. This year the event will be held on Tuesday, September 14th on the Columbus State main campus. The weather forecast looks promising (mid-70′s and clear), so it should once again be an awesome event that shows off the best of what Columbus has to offer.
