From DUMBO, now MADE in Mitte

Brooklynite in Berlin, g raphic designer Ebon Heath, is the current artist in motion at concept gallery with a difference, MADE This weekend, while lucky enough to be reviewing the fabulous new Soho House Berlin *, I was honoured to get an eyeful of Ebon Heath ’s typographical creations in the most inspiring art space imaginable – a ninth-floor studio in the sky. In the same Alexanderplatz high-rise that houses hip bar and club Week-End , a group of visionary Berliners – Philip Gaedicke (below left), Nico Zeh (middle), Tadi Rock and Luise Biesalski – are taking art to a new level, as I have previously blogged about for the New York Times . FONT OF HOUSE The New York graphic designer is the latest creative to be embraced by German art gallery MADE, and the Dumbo resident is here in Mitte working on his jewellery and mobiles in situ

Beer & Cheese Tasting at the White Horse, Parsons Green

Anyone who has been following this blog for long enough will have noticed that I don’t really talk about wine very much. At first it was because I decided I didn’t know enough about it to make any salient points, and so I just kept quiet rather than run the risk of embarrassing myself. Following that, there was a period of time where I made a conscious effort to learn more and write more about wine, and I can’t thank enough wine lovers like Robert Macintosh of Wine Conversation and Dan and Gareth of Bibendum who have gamely and enthusiastically organised some wonderful events and tastings for food bloggers in the face of what must have been a frustratingly slow and amateurish response (although I’m talking mainly about myself here).

Sri Bistari Famous Nasi Ayam Penyet @ Changi Village

To be honest, I haven’t tried a lot of Indonesian food but I can vouch my love for Ayam Penyet, this wonderful traditional dish that originates from Subaraya. Smashed fried chicken served with rice and spicy hot sambal, so simple yet so additively delicious. Not too far away from Tampines at Changi Village is Sri Bistari

At the 6 months mark, I feel integrated again

At the end of last year, I wrote a blog entry (for those of you who have just started reading my blog, it’d probably be a good one to read) where I outlined my goal for 2010: to feel like an integrated person again . My definition of integrated person is the same that I grew up – “someone who does art, science, humanitarianism and sports, all equally well/intensely” .

Top 5 Attractions in Hannover

The city of Hannover is located in southern Germany and is the capital city of the region known as Lower Saxony. For the first-time visitor you should be aware that Hannover is no longer one of Europe’s typical cities. Destroyed in large part by the ravages of World War II , there are only a few of the more significant historical landmarks left.

Pubs or gastropubs

Gastropubs are pubs that retain a traditional atmosphere yet provide seasonal meals. In Hampstead the Bull and Last is one such pub that even offers a Homemade Chacuterie Board. I look forward to the Beer Battered Haddock, Pea Puree, Chips & Tartare Sauce (add a Wally for 75p) and would not pass on a dessert menu which includes Yorkshire Rhubarb Clafoutis w/ Stem Ginger Ice-Cream.

Recipe #139: Penne alla Vodka con Olive Nere (Penne in Vodka Sauce with Black Olives) (Vegetarian Version)

Yep, you guessed it. This recipe was tonight’s dinner selection. :) Although this recipe post is tagged as “Italian,” there is some debate about where penne alla vodka really originated

Hix Oyster and Chop House, Clerkenwell

Hix Oyster and Chop House Since March, Jon has been training to do a relay swim across the English Channel . Beginning tomorrow evening, he and his teammates will be waiting for their crossing boat pilot to tell them “today’s the day.” And then they’ll be setting off from the dark shores of Dover sometime after midnight, dodging tankers, jellyfish and waves to (hopefully) reach France in 12-15 hours’ time

Parksville through the eyes of a foreign visitor (series)

I am in beautiful Parksville, British Columbia, courtesy of Oceanside Tourism Association (Vancouver Island) thanks to a kind invitation by the always amazing Luba Plotnikoff. I had covered the UnCorked Wine and Food Festival before here on my site, and I am delighted to be returning to Parksville and Qualicum Beach, this time with my Mom in tow

Sockeye City Grill (Steveston, BC)

I was told that visiting Steveston, BC without doing the traditional ‘fish and chips’ was pretty much doing it all wrong. So, JT and I decided (albeit a tad late) to have dinner at the docks. We couldn’t get to Paijo’s because they were closing (yeah, even if it’s super sunny at 8pm, it’s still 8pm and thus some of the restaurants are closed, particularly on Sunday).

The Steveston Interurban Tram (Steveston, BC)

photo credit: Neil T I happened to walk upon a site within the community of Steveston where there was an interurban tram ( The Steveston Interurban Tram ). Considering how complicated the urban transit situation is in the Greater Vancouver area, I am totally shocked that there was an interurban tram and that urban planning folks in the region didn’t make better use of it, or make sure to keep it around.

Hotel of the week: Residenza Napoleone III

There are times when less just simply isn’t more. Bored by minimalism and modernity, we’re hankering after the kind of extravagance that would make a maharajah blush. We’re talking grand beds with marshmallow-plump bedspreads and squashy silk cushions, lofty ceilings with ornate frescoes, walls bedecked with paintings of stirring scenes and haughty miens and bathrooms so seductive, you’ll be tempted to forsake dry land for a lifetime of bathing bliss

Open your mouth

More culinary quotes that I found. As food undoubtedly inspires, the spirit that is borne is captured in inane, provoking, ponderous, insane or straight thoughts and words that has seasoned our lives through thousands of years. “…the key dietary messages are stunningly simple: Eat less, move more, eat more fruits and vegetables, and don’t eat too much junk food

South Vancouver and its ethnic food diversity

I went to the area around 41st Avenue (41st to 49th, on Fraser Street, NOT Little India as people may be mistaken) and was just observing the variety of ethnic foods we get in terms of restaurants in that area – Pakistani, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc. Related posts: What’s your favorite Indian food place in Vancouver

A Mysterious Dinner at Three Tables…at Ten Tables

By Tuesday, I had been sweating constantly for at least three days straight. The heat finally broke last night with a couple quick rainstorms. On Tuesday, though, we were still in the thick of the 90 degree days with no end in sight

Lost Lake Park (Whistler, BC)

During our writing retreat, Mom and I were hoping to spend the whole day doing research and updating the book manuscript while at the Whistler Village . But when our laptop battery died, we decided to take a stroll around the village. We inquired about where we could go that wouldn’t require too much exertion (Mom has a bit of a knee injury and thus she can’t walk as fast or as far away as she normally would)
