Wie auch bei den anderen Teilen dieser Serie gilt: Vorher anrufen kann vor Enttäuschungen schützen.

OLS Week 3: BLT Bonanza

This week’s One Local Summer meal(s) were inspired by the beautiful Crispino iceberg lettuce I bought from Wayward Seed Farm at the farmers market last Saturday. With lettuce so fresh and crisp, it was just begging for me to make a BLT with mostly local ingredients. The bacon was from Thurn’s, the tomatoes from WishWell Farms, and the bread was Vienna bread from The Andersons.

Report: Thailand fails to crack down on ivory bazaars, much of it from African elephants

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s government has failed to crack down on one of the world’s largest markets of illegal ivory, allowing vendors to openly sell products that come from African elephants, a conservation group said in a report released Friday. The group TRAFFIC, which monitors trade in wildlife, said that judging by recent seizures of ivory imports and exports and several surveys it has done since 2006, Thailand has surpassed traditional hotspots like Japan and China .Hundreds of venues from five-star hotels to the popular Chatuchak weekend market in the capital, Bangkok — which has by far the biggest markets in the country — were found to be selling tens of thousands of items, from pricey carvings of religious deities to cheaper bangles, belt buckles and knife handles.Much of the illegal ivory is smuggled from central African countries to workshops outside Bangkok, the British-based conservation group said. Merchants in the capital and to a lesser degree tourist cities like Chiang Mai sell the ivory products to locals as well as foreign tourists, benefiting from loopholes in current laws that make it hard to crack down on the trade

Nuclear power emerges as green option for Asia

MANILA: Nuclear power is emerging as a key option as a source of “green energy” for most developing Asian countries, as they seek to stem the spike in greenhouse gas emission that came with the region’s economic success, experts who participated in a Manila forum said. The growing concern over climate change and how it will hurt the region’s environment, human health and economy has forced economic planners, advocates and business leaders in Asia to search for a stable energy source that can moderate the carbon emissions, China’s Xinhua news agency cited them as saying. “Developing Asian countries whether they like it or not should take a look at nuclear power as a source of energy,” said Piyasvasti Amranand, chief advisor of the Bangkok-based Energy for Environment Foundation and former Thai energy minister at the closing of the Asia Clean Energy Forum on Friday.

A Brief History of Pie and Mash

The way people would grab a takeaway in Victorian London was to purchase a pie from one of the 600 piemen that walked up and down the streets. You could choose between a meat pie, a fruit, fish or an eel one, these would be sold straight off their trays, the transaction was done from the pavement as most couldn’t afford the outlay for a shop to sell their goods from. The piemen would have to wake early and row their boats over to the British and foreign vessels that moored up on the river Thames, from here their stock of fish would be transported over to the legendry Billingsgate Market, established in 1600s.

International tourists unimpressed by Impressive Vietnam-18 June, 2009

ANOI – Media sources in Vietnam say the largest-ever Vietnamese tourism promotion, Impressive Vietnam”, jointly organised by Vietnam Airlines and tourist companies to attract foreign tourists, has failed to deliver. Saigon Daily reports that after just five months of the nine month promotion, many businesses have withdrawn from the campaign after several shortcomings were revealed. Operators have complained that they have been unable to arrange tours because Vietnam Airlines, which backed the promotion with discounted fares, has been unable to reveal how many discounted seats they will make available.
