All things considered, the best restaurants that this country has produced probably have been unpretentious, inexpensive, high-volume eateries located close to sources of fresh food. In 19th-century New York City’s Smith & McNell’s, across from the booming Washington Market, was a leading example of the type. Its patronage came largely from dealers, farmers, and customers who worked and shopped at the market.

Ramly burger stall at Ampang Jaya 7-11 One of the things that the venerable Malaysian Tourism Minister should have claimed as truly Malaysian is the Ramly Burger. Nobody will ever dispute that the Ramly Burger is a Malaysian invention. In fact, I would go on to say that it is one of the Shiokest things that Malaysia has ever produced.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, dim sum is one of the genuine – and depressingly rare – gourmet bargains of London. Yesterday at Dragon Castle, a cavernous and clattering space on the otherwise bleak Walworth Road, six of us worked our way through 26 individual plates of dim sum, as well as three huge servings of roast pork, roast duck and stir-fry beef in black bean sauce, washed down with a beer or two. The bill came to about £20 a head

Walmart Stores Inc, the world’s largest retailer, which operates a retail JV with India’s telecom behemoth Bharti Enterprises (Bharti Walmart Retail Limited), is satisfied with its results and is looking at expanding the footprint of its cash and carry stores in India. This was stated by Anand Sharma, Commerce & Industries minister of India, while talking with media persons during the India Economic Summit held in New Delhi.

interior of Dragon Castle Chinese restaurant in Elephant & Castle A month ago, Jon and I went to see the highly-entertaining (popular, even) Pop Life exhibit at the Tate Modern , and afterwards, we somehow reasoned that because Elephant & Castle was so “close by,” we should try out Dragon Castle for dinner, which TimeOut loved . So we hopped on the Northern Line at London Bridge and emerged two stops later at Elephant & Castle station, which sounds so wondrous on the map, but in fact is rather gritty. Navigating the hulking roundabout just outside the station makes Old Street roundabout look like a picturesque jaunt through the countryside

Based on the comments so far, it looks like Singapore’s favourite Crab dish is no longer Black Pepper Crab or Chilli Crab. I am predicting that Crab Bee Hoon might be the current National Crab Dish. Only one way to find out and that is to conduct a poll! So the poll booth is opened! Tell us which is your favourite crab dish! You get to pick two of your favourite crab dishes

Walmart Stores, world’s largest multi-brand retailer with over $400 billion in annual sales and operations under 53 banners across 15 countries (including India), is lobbying hard for change of policy on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in India. Currently, while no FDI is allowed in the multi-brand segment of retail operations, up to 51 per cent of foreign equity is allowed in single-brand retail and up to 100 per cent foreign equity is allowed in cash and carry (B2B) wholesale (indirect retail) in India. S Robson Walton, chairman of Wal-Mart Stores, according to an ET report , called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, to impress upon him the need to open the multi-brand, front-end, retail segment to foreign investors in India

Not everyone wants to maintain a food blog but I know that there are a lot of foodies amongst our readers who are really good at recommending a good place to eat every now and again. So, what I thought would be interesting is if our facebook group wall can be made into a community food blog where everyone recommend something good to eat. Even if you don’t like to write a review, you can still join in the fun by commenting or even just clicking that you like the particular review

Good Indian food and fine dining room in London This is one of a handful of London’s Indian restaurants with a ‘head office’ in India. Our Chor Bizarre is a straight copy of the one in the Broadway Hotels in Delhi . Its name is an elaborate pun (Chor Bazaar translates as ‘thieves’ market’) and, like the Delhi branch, the London bars and restaurant is furnished with Indian antiques and bric-a-brac.

Strawberry Pudding has been a favorite since ages and eons, and as these berries are easily available almost all year round, there’s no restraint on indulging in a sweet dessert pudding whenever you fancy to have one! Puddings can be of various types, creamy, gooey, gelatinous or cake-like, and as the last one is one of my favorites, I chose a baked pudding that’s softer than a cake, yet light in texture. The inspiration came from a craving for a traditional Strawberry Shortcake, but I didn’t…

In common, I’m sure, with many other borderline-autistic foodies, I obsessively crave the new, the rare and the unique. In restaurants I will gravitate towards the more unusual ingredients and preparations, in bars I will order a pint of whichever looks the most likely to be shocking and/or disgusting, and I very rarely say no to any mysterious dark spirit placed in front of me at the end of a long night

I bet you’ve never had a sea urchin cappuccino before…unless you attended Green Mountain Coffee’s Eat, Drink & Be Fair event this past Wednesday at the Artists for Humanity Epicenter. The event was a celebration of Fair Trade Month, and organizers aimed to raise awareness of the importance of buying Fair Trade products. (Fun fact: October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month and National Dental Hygiene Month, so it seems like a good month to be conscious of what you’re putting in your mouth.) Read more here ..

JESSE @ Packrat Louie (780) 433-0123 10334-83 Avenue Old Strathcona, Edmonton, Alberta Why he’s dreamy: Because after 6 weeks of existing on a starving artist’s meager pay while on tour in Canada this summer, CG1 finally ponied up the plastic for a real meal, and this handsome fellow got the job done right. The perfectly pink-red juicy beef tenderloin with caramelized onions, potato gratin, morel cream, and garlic sauteed mushrooms made up for every burger she had to decline in the weeks prior. Did you know it’s illegal in Canada to cook a burger less than well-done

In light of the recession many people are forgoing conventional dinner parties and instead opting for a rich but simplified menu. Having come to be known as chic “Wine Parties”, guests usually delight in being able to have a more casual get together that isn’t meal-oriented. These new types of parties are not only friendly on the wallet, but are also far more time/cost efficient – requiring less preparation and clean up, they can be thrown at the last minute while still being a hit with your…
