Marzipan Treats

A favorite Indian Christmas sweet, Marzipan is made in to all manner of shapes, the most popular being fruits. What you can do with it is practically limitless, since you can mix food colour into portions of Marzipan as you knead or even paint on the shapes once you’ve made them, using a regular artist’s paint brush! I once knew a girl who used to make Marzipan Shapes (pictured at right) by the kilo and then fill them in little gift bags to give to friends as presents over the festive season. Now that is what I call spreading the joy! © Photographer: Myrthe Krook | Agency: Dreamstime.com Marzipan Treats originally appeared on About.com Indian Food on Monday, December 7th, 2009 at 01:27:51

Standard Chartered Credit/Debit Cards: 15% cashback at any restaurant

Advertorial Dining with Fin and Barry – Standard Chartered’s Dining Mascots I am sure you would have seen the Standard Chartered Ads featuring two fish in a restaurant tank. What you might not know is that the fish have names. The small, neurotic one which reminds me of Billy Crystal is called Fin and the big hypothyroxic one is named Barry

Gluten-Free Christmas or Thanksgiving Holiday Recipes: Vegetarian Soy-Free Dairy-free Cornbread Dressing Recipe

One of my favorite breads has to be cornbread. Something about that faintly sweet, almost nutty corn flavor says homey comfort food to me. When I first went dairy and soy free to breast feed my daughter, I was happy to find that I could still have Pamela’s gluten-free cornbread mix.

Esarn Kheaw, Shepherd’s Bush

todmun pla (fish cakes) at Esarn Kheaw Thai restaurant (£4.95) Because of Rosa Thai’s proximity to my office, I eat lunch there almost once a week.  I invariably order the green curry with pork, which I love for its tender slices of pork, the generous handful of crunchy bamboo slivers, and its balance of sweet, salty and spicy flavors.  Much as I love my lunches there, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not exactly testing out the menu at Rosa’s when I go. So when my friend told me he’d enjoyed dinner at Esarn Kheaw and forwarded me this ecstatic January 2009 review in the Guardian , it was a no-brainer to get myself over to Shepherd’s Bush earlier this week.  By coincidence, last night, when I picked up this week’s issue of TimeOut , I saw Easarn Kheaw listed as one of London’s best Thai restaurants and described as “ the place to try some of the real tastes of Thailand.” Which makes me wonder:  have either the writer of that Guardian review or TimeOut been back to Esarn Kheaw recently

V V List Release Saturday Dec. 5, 2009

Greetings Fellow Tipplers! It’s hard to believe – this is our last list for 2009. We’ve had a lot of fun tasting the Vintages releases this year – a lot of sniffing, sipping, spitting and discussion have occurred on this list’s behalf. This year, more than ever, we needed to find good value for our dollar spent given the deteriorating economic situation.

Yalla Yalla, Soho

Being British, and brought up in Liverpool, my cultural reference points for what people have recently taken to calling “Street Food” consisted of the burger van outside the local multiplex and the guy selling roast chestnuts on Church Street. And in case you were wondering, neither of these things are exactly the kind of “concept” you could “roll out” to the discerning patrons of Soho – not before pub chucking out time anyway.

RMT: Network Rail bosses enjoy five-star opulence while 1,500 face the sack (2.12.09)

RAIL UNION RMT has blasted senior Network Rail chiefs as it emerged that they are holding meetings in the five star opulence of Londons Langham Hotel while multi-billion pound cuts have left 1500 essential safety maintenance staff facing the sack. The Network Rail board met at the Langham Hotel on Wednesday 2nd December with the job cuts package one of the items under discussion.

Galvin La Chapelle, Spitalfields

Galvin La Chapelle interior I love Galvin Bistro de Luxe in Marylebone for its convivial atmosphere, its professional service, and its bistro classics served at reasonable prices. So when Galvin La Chapelle recently opened just a few steps from my office, I disregarded this negative review and, last Friday, dragged my friend BK there for lunch. This post should be taken with a bigger grain of salt than usual because I tried only one dish, but here are my impressions anyway: Prices at Galvin La Chapelle are noticeably higher than they are at Galvin Bistro

Cheyne Walk Brasserie (26th Nov 09)

Kate: This lovely restaurant is just at the end of our street and we’d been waiting for a special occasion to go since we moved to the area. My birthday seemed like as good a reason as any and meant that we would be able to easily stagger home after birthday over-indulgence. Cheyne Walk Brasserie has a comfortable and cosy ambience but still feels ‘upmarket’ and exclusive due to the tiffany-blue leather decor, chandeliers, attentive service and the local clientele. Here’s what we ate: Rob had Raviole de Homard et sa Mousse Légère sur Lit de Salsifies £13.50 Lobster Ravioli and its light Mousse on a Bed of Salsify (g) Followed by R ibeye of Beef 350g  £21.50   Kate had: L’Assiette de la Mer £16.50 Selection of Salmon Tartar, Scallops, Oyster, Tiger Prawns and Cornish Crab Followed by Filet de Boeuf Poêlé, Purée de Céleris-raves et Truffes, Sauce au Vin Rouge et à l’Echalote £ 24.00 Pan Fried Beef Fillet with Celeriac and Truffle Purée, Red Wine and Shallot Sauce We then had a slice of Patisserie Valerie chocolate birthday cake that the restaurant had ordered in at Rob’s request.

Cheese and Biscuits On Tour – San Diego

Before I begin a rundown of the food highlights of my recent trip to San Diego, it’s probably worth reminding myself to not get too carried away. Yes, I ate very well, in a number of places, most of which were on the “dirt” side of “cheap” and one or two meals (usually involving fried meat patties) rank up there with some of the best food I’ve ever eaten anywhere.

Tawa Pullao

Among the many noises on the streets of Mumbai – like traffic, horn, hawkers, construction work, local trains, bollywood music, cricket matches, ocean waves – one of the best noises to hear, especially when your are ravenous, is the “taka tak” of the huge spoons/ladles/spatulas on the equally huge tawa/pan. Yes – Pav bhaji, tawa pullao, paneer taka-tak! :-D I found a wonderful tawa pulao recipe at chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s website . I tried to make it healthier by using more veggies like purple cabbage, carrots, different colored bell peppers and even moong sprouts!! So for authentic recipe – please visit chef Kapoor’s original version ! Recipe Source – http://www.sanjeevkapoor.com/Recipe.aspx?RecipeId=3632&Header=Searched Recipe&MenuId=0 My modifications – 1

Restaurant Review: The Mint Leaf

Fingertips’ expert food and drink correspondent Seun Fabunmi checks out one of London’s hottest Indian restaurants London is known for its splendid variety of authentic restaurants and bars , especially around the Westend, and the Mint Leaf doesn’t disappoint. But despite it’s high standards, the Mint Leaf is so well-hidden in this corner of the capital you probably wouldn’t even know it was there.

Sugar, Spice and All Things Nice…

My Mom has cut, chopped and soaked masses of candied peels in rum ages ago, in anticipation of Christmas cake-making time! I can’t get over the fact that it’s that time of year again! Days just seem to have flown by! Anyway, time aside, nobody makes Christmas cake like my Mom. It is among the most anticipated foods in our huge family! When she bakes it, the house is filled with the delicious smells of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla.
