Nochebuena

photo credit: Carina Ice I was delighted to see my friend Minna Van ( The Network Hub ) grab a couple of poinsettias for the office, and I made a comment that, in reality, poinsettias’ name should not be poinsettias but Nochebuenas. It actually pisses me off that people don’t realize that nochebuenas (aka poinsettias) are indigenous to Mexico (Wikipedia entry here should you require more information). As indicated by the entry (and something I knew since the very first time I visited the US) The name “poinsettia” is after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1828.

The New Ieatishootipost Facebook Page!

We are getting too big for our facebook group so we have to move our group to a fan page instead! Once our Facebook group hits 5000 members, I will not be able to send out personal messages to inform members of upcoming events anymore. We are currently 4757 strong, so we will probably outgrow our facebook group very soon. Before that happens, I am asking everyone to move over to the new facebook page instead.

Top five children’s travel essentials

This week, a lot of us will be bundling kids into cars, planes or trains  and taking them to whichever lucky relatives have the pleasure this Christmas – or maybe even running away from it all to a hotel. To help avoid any ‘are we there yet?’-inspired infanticide, we asked Kayt Sukel , writer, mother, Smith hotel reviewer and wünderblogger over at Travel Savvy Mom , to give us a list of her must-have travel gear for child-toting globetrotters… For the most part, I’m not a mom who is all that down with travel ‘accessories.’ In my experience, the only required elements for successful travel with kids are an extra pack of wet wipes (for all of the stuff that will be unceremoniously smeared on Mom’s pants) and a slightly twisted sense of humor. But now that Chet has ventured to nearly 30 countries, I must admit there are a handful of items we could not do without: 1

Lighter Spirits = Less Hangover?

The is an interesting piece of research going around that says lighter coloured spirits, like vodka, will give you less of a hangover compared to spirits like bourbon. I don’t disagree with the researchers conclusion, and many people could point to personal experience and come up with the same answer. However, studies like this are bad so here’s my peer review.

Tracy Jordan reminds me of my Greek side of the family during the holidays

Goodness me, I love the holidays as I paraphrase the words Claire Danes from the movie Stardust, Neil Gaimen I love you by the way, “Love can be mistaken for loathing.” I don’t think I’ve ever completed my Christmas shopping before the week of the damn holiday for fear of so many people who are evil. Yes, we know Christ wasn’t born on the 25th day of December. Yes, those of us celebrate it for goodness and fun it can be

We ask the questions: Q&A with La Villa, and a man who knows his truffles

To the untrained eye, truffles may resemble nothing so closely as potatoes and lumps of volcanic rock. But this doesn’t deter some of the world’s most refined palates from shaving them into risottos and whipping them up with scrambled eggs. The white Piedmont truffle, with its mild, earthy flavour and wonderful aroma, is the pinnacle of the fungal form

Its official! Chilli Crab is still Singapore’s National Crab Dish!

At first I really thought that the Chilli Crab had lost its place in the stomach of Singaporeans whose tastebuds might have been swayed towards Salted Egg Crab or Crab Bee Hoon. But lo and behold, our poll of 2077 people showed that Chilli Crabs are still King with 49.6% of the votes followed by Black Pepper Crabs at 30.2% with Salted Egg Crabs in third place at 20.2%. Long live Chilli Crabs! Talking about Chilli Crabs, our AGM is being held at none other than the home of the Chilli Crab, viz Roland Restaurant
