Arang Korean restaurant/barbecue sits on Golden Square in Soho – a large, spacious cantine-style room with tables lit by what appear to be neon snooker table lamps each of which has an industrial ventilation tube zooming out of it that hovers, Bladrunner style, over your table’s hotplate. The hotplate is the centre of fun at Arang, although by all means do not limit your choices to the barbecue section as the starters, noodle and rice dishes are all worth a go, including a stellar Bi Bim Bap. The staff are smiley and will help you pronounce the tongue twisters on the menu without the sort of patronising glare from l’enfer you might get in a French restaurant when ordering wine with an English accent, they are also incredibly efficient with food arriving in a smooth and steady flow and every little pot of pickles or dipping sauce explained properly.

Leave it to one of the world’s best “family-friendly” hotels to track down the top nannies in Britain to come take care of young guests at the hotel. After a nation-wide search, three “real-life Mary Poppins-like ladies” were chosen by the Athenaeum Hotel’s selective interview panel consisting of Serena Zandegu, the hotel’s Kids Concierge; six-year-old Alexander Clement-Davies; 10-year old Honor Robson; and actress Lynda Bellingham, star of Calendar Girls and All Creatures Great and Small.

Our staff takes an active part in PHPA! Their collective vote for the prizewinner counts as one vote of the jury. For example, yesterday at the Hôtel Design Sorbonne they all got together in the breakfast room for a serious photo study… and a lighthearted chat! Look at the effort they put in! Apart from the main prize that they collectively vote towards, the staff have their own personal prize, decided just by themselves. Called the Virginie Clément prize (after one of the hotel’s employees taken by cancer) the winner get a mega-giant bottle of champagne! Check back here tomorrow for details of the winners of the two prizes, after they have been announced this evening at the Théâtre de l’Odéon, durning the exhibition inauguration!

A few years ago, while traveling in Mauritius, I caught an episode of “Deep Fried Paradise” on the Travel Channel. I found myself captivated – one, that someone would create an entire television show dedicated to deep fried food – had they heard my secret wish for such a thing? Second, that a restaurant only about 15 miles away from my U.S.

These burgers hold a special place in my heart- why you ask- well, because this was the first time my daughter started eating burgers! She does not like sandwiches- they only one she will eat is a jam sandwich. I don’t make it for her very often since it offers hardly any food value.

Mas Empanadas: homemade with natural ingredients I’m a big fan of versatile foods. It is great when you find that perfect edible item that can just as easily be stuck in your purse and eaten on the go as it can be savored with a fork and knife at a sit down meal. Burritos and sandwich wraps have long occupied this highly valuable class of chow

In this week’s Shallow Thought Wednesdays post, John Lindner describes an encounter with Fat Eric’s, a fine-dining take-out/delivery operation in the basement of a church on Fort Avenue. The operation strikes me as an interesting way to get in on the food industry without the huge start-up costs and serving staff needed for a sit-down restaurant. In that sense, the place has something in common with all those food trucks out there
