Ooty to Coonoor

We hope to take the toy train from Ooty to Coonoor during our trip to India in December. In reading about the train, I’m not sure if this is a good idea or if we should take the train for all 4 1/2 hours? Also, we thought we’d stay in Coonoor but I haven’t found many mid-range options–does anyone have any suggestion?

Immunizations,?Rabies/Meningitis

My doctor suggests as well as the usual hepatitis A&B,Tetanus,Polio that I get Rabies shots as a precaution as well as meningitis prevention shots? I know many will think this is overkill, but I would like the opinion of those who have travelled there a lot as this is my first trip. Thank you…

Itinery

My daughter is a fourth year medical student in the US and is going to spend the month of April 2011 as a medical volunteer in Dehradun, Than Geon, and Mussoorie. I want to take that opportunity to spend about 3 weeks in India and Nepal before meeting her in one of the above locations. The itinery I am working on is Delhi (2 days), Jaipur (2 days), Agra (2 days), Kharuraho (2 days), Varanasi (2 days), Katmandu (3 days).

Found an interesting website on IR…

Just stumbled upon this website giving information about live status of trains on service now..there is also information on seat availability and trains between two stations. Not sure how far this delay of late running trains are accurate but all other info is available including the average moving speed of each train! http://indiarailinfo.com/ If you want a quick info regarding any train, I advise you to try this website instead of the slow-loading irctc website

Gluten-free, Allergen-free Vegan Amaranth Flatbread Recipe Mix

This recipe has been in the works for quite a while. I’ve been making it for months, experimenting with different variations. I’m not sure why I kept holding off on posting it, but maybe it was because I was waiting for just the right combination of flavors

Gluten-free Potato-free Carrot French Fry Recipe

In the world of allergens, potato is an unexpectedly common trigger for some people. In the course cutting out foods that seemed to bother Baby Yum, I found it necessary to cut out potato from my diet. I just about went crazy! Where were my hash browns, my french fries, my baked potatoes, my starchy gnocchi, my knishes?

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, and Egg-free Amaranth Scone Recipe

I think we might have to rename the Book of Yum to “the Book of Amaranth” if I keep this up. I can’t help it. I’m eating amaranth every four days, thanks to this crazy allergen-free, gluten-free diet that I’m on.

Second Stop Cafe reviewed by beanmail on August 12, 2010

Simple cafe on the same block as Champs Family Bakery! Food: The day I visited they had a veggie sandwich special that was not only great, but totally trumped the looks of my omni friend’s turkey sandwich (obviously). Fresh bread, hummus, and tons of veggies; only disappointed that it didn’t come with a couple of chips or something besides a strawberry. Atmosphere: eclectic decor, but a little too cramped/filled with wifi users for my taste.

Gluten-free Indian Quinoa Masala Recipe

Ever since I embarked on a special allergen-free diet for Baby Yum, I have been experimenting with some of the more exotic gluten-free “grains” or pseudo grains. Some of these have been a trial (amaranth, anyone?) and others have been a true pleasure to work with (quinoa, sorghum, millet). Quinoa is a grain that I long thought bothered my tummy, but it turns out other grains may have actually been the culprit

Blockheads (Upper East Side) reviewed by Adah on August 8, 2010

My omnivore neighbors love this place and since they delivery, and I was too lazy to cook, I gave it a try. Blockheads is a better quality Chipotle or Qdobas. They’re menu has a lot of vegetable or bean based vegetarian options and they claim that they can make many vegetarian items vegan; they offer tofu based sour cream and a soy cheese

Whole Earth Bakery & Kitchen reviewed by Justinelinn on August 5, 2010

Whole Earth Bakery is amazing! I’ve been going here for years and it’s the only place in the city that I can find vegan, wheat-free and sugar-free baked items. Many places offer vegan treats, but all contain wheat or sugar, others are wheat-free but not vegan or sugar-free. This place does it all! For vegans and those with food allergies, Whole Earth Bakery is a godsend.
