Not long ago, we dispatched travel blogger Heather Cowper on an anonymous review trip to the enchanting Hotel Heritage Av Liberdade in Portugal’s capital. Not only did she produce a terrific hotel review , but she also gave us a whistle-stop tasting tour of the city’s eats… There are so many things I could tell you about our trip to Lisbon . Maybe fado music, the mournful mixture of folk and blues that is sometimes lively, sometimes sad, with lyrics of longing and lost love and being far from home

New Year has come and gone, and we feel a little older, not really much wiser, a lot fatter and just a little bit more desperate to get away. It’s lucky then, that so many of our stylish self-catering stays have decided to slice their prices. Like the sound of an elegant country house set in sweeping lawns overlooking the East Devon coast, or a peaceful Moroccan riad with a cool courtyard and a panorama-endowed roof-terrace

One too many slips on icy pavements recently has made us all feel a little like hiding away until spring (though maybe not in the fridge, like Anthony’s tortoise). But despite the demise of the festive season, it’s not all gloom out there. Allow us to introduce a few new hotels to get you dreaming in 2010… First up, may we suggest some hearty rural romps in the Dorset countryside, before resting your head at the Museum Inn – a romantic restaurant with rooms in Farnham village.

With the clink of midnight champagne still ringing in our ears (not New Year’s Eve – we just like champagne), the Smith Travel Blog comes skipping into 2010 with a fistful of resolutions, most of which involve getting more stamps in our passport, more hotels in our collection, and more gin in our martini. photo credit: Carina Ice I was delighted to see my friend Minna Van ( The Network Hub ) grab a couple of poinsettias for the office, and I made a comment that, in reality, poinsettias’ name should not be poinsettias but Nochebuenas. It actually pisses me off that people don’t realize that nochebuenas (aka poinsettias) are indigenous to Mexico (Wikipedia entry here should you require more information). As indicated by the entry (and something I knew since the very first time I visited the US) The name “poinsettia” is after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1828.

This week, a lot of us will be bundling kids into cars, planes or trains and taking them to whichever lucky relatives have the pleasure this Christmas – or maybe even running away from it all to a hotel. To help avoid any ‘are we there yet?’-inspired infanticide, we asked Kayt Sukel , writer, mother, Smith hotel reviewer and wünderblogger over at Travel Savvy Mom , to give us a list of her must-have travel gear for child-toting globetrotters… For the most part, I’m not a mom who is all that down with travel ‘accessories.’ In my experience, the only required elements for successful travel with kids are an extra pack of wet wipes (for all of the stuff that will be unceremoniously smeared on Mom’s pants) and a slightly twisted sense of humor. But now that Chet has ventured to nearly 30 countries, I must admit there are a handful of items we could not do without: 1

To the untrained eye, truffles may resemble nothing so closely as potatoes and lumps of volcanic rock. But this doesn’t deter some of the world’s most refined palates from shaving them into risottos and whipping them up with scrambled eggs. The white Piedmont truffle, with its mild, earthy flavour and wonderful aroma, is the pinnacle of the fungal form

The Museum of the City of New York is getting in on the speakeasy craze with an outdoor speakeasy every Wednesday, set in a newly opened section of the museum that overlooks Central Park. Tell Them Jerry Sent You features drinks from the Prohibition era, although the point isn’t to have a secret bar, but rather to make historically accurate cocktails.
