I have what I consider to be a perfectly rational fear of industrial beef, one that anyone who’s seen ” Food Inc .” or read ” The Omnivore’s Dilemma ” should understand. Which makes this, the season of potluck cook-outs, a little awkward

Just got off the phone with George Marsh, chef de cuisine at Woodberry Kitchen , who was good enough to fill me in on that goat dinner I blogged about earlier today. “We basically do the whole goat, roasted — slow-roasted ahead of time,” Marsh said. The meat, raised on Washington County pasture with no added hormones or routine antibiotics, is simply prepared, with salt, pepper and fresh herbs.

Just got some interesting news about a special goat dinner at Woodberry Kitchen. It came to me by way of Jeanne Dietz-Band, who raises goat on Washington County’s Many Rocks Farm and started selling the meat this year at the Sunday Farmers’ Market under the JFX.

Reviews by Lee Scott, special to the Times-Union Some of the best science fiction/fantasy writing in decades has graced our bookstore shelves lately, but to find it you have to look in the young adult section. Adding to the list are two fine “debut” novels, coming in at opposite ends of the fiction/fantasy spectrum, “Ship Breaker” by Paolo Bacigalupi and “The Fire Opal” by Regina McBride …

Food bloggers are often accused of a herd mentality, of obsessing over the latest fads and new openings and of flooding the blogosphere with identical reviews at the same time. Of course, when the national critics do the same , as when Bar Boulud and Roux at Parliament Square opened in the same week and every single paper contained a review of either one or the other, nobody seems to care. I’d like to think it’s because people are so used to the stunning variety and engaging, impartial comment on the best food blogs that any similarities in content stand out like a sore thumb, whereas nobody really reads the national press to find out what a restaurant is like; the actual subject matter is secondary to a good read.

Whenever I am invited to restaurant openings, I am almost always betting I’m going to bump into a bunch of my food blogger friends. It is a nice departure from other social media events I attend and one that I really enjoy. As the organizer of the Vancouver Blogger Meetup , I feel kind of responsible to know just about every blogger in Vancouver, even if they don’t know each other prior

Design and interface Camcorder design has in many ways been massaged into oblivion: it’s hard to design a barrel-shaped camera that breaks from the template. The X100 will feel very much familiar to anyone who’s used a typical digital camcorder, but that does lead to a comfortable, easy-to-grip design.

I already gave you the meat-and-potatoes on Grano at Chestnut’s expansion . Now here’s the icing on the cake: the restaurant isn’t the only thing getting bigger; its dessert menu is growing, too. Part of the reason for the expansion is to create a space that will serve as a coffee-and-dessert lounge, said Will Bauer, who is overseeing the project for the Hampden restaurant

SIV is a true supporter of chef shuffles over at Ammo . Last time she shared thinkage on Ammo back in 2008, she offered two and a half starts for the cuisine of Julia Wolfson, describing her food as “the closest thing to Chez Panisse cafe fare in these parts.” Not too shabby at all. Today, SIV ups the star power to a full three big ones , with praise for new king of the kitchen, Daniel Mattern who hails from the Campanile, Lucques, AOC fame

There’s a new Amish farmers’ market in Baltimore, in a former bingo hall in Cherry Hill. Patapsco Dutch Farmers’ Market, at 3321 Annapolis Road, opened about two weeks ago with 15 vendors, who travel from Lancaster, Pa., to sell their meats, eggs, cheese, butter and milk, baked goods, soft pretzels and ice cream, and prepared meals like barbecued chicken, ribs and fried chicken. There is also a sit-down restaurant, called Maria’s Dutch Kitchen.
