Nightlife: Nightclub Whale Jho Low Finally Breaks His Silence

Malaysian man of mystery Jho Low has finally decided to break his silence and discuss all of those rumors about his crazy partying ways. The Wharton grad and current richie tells a local Malaysian paper that while he does enjoy a night on the town, he isn’t footing the bill for all of those six figure nights in New York, Las Vegas and St Tropez. For example, Low says that the $2 million dollar Champagne bill his brother rang up was really just “40-50 of us friends who ordered some drinks and had a good relaxing night”

Lawsuits: More Employees Jump Aboard Batali/Bastianich Wage Lawsuit

On Wednesday, Joe Bastianich told Eater that he and partner Mario Batali were going to fight a recent labor wage lawsuit filed by Babbo employees ” to every inch of the law.” Now, the lawyer who filed the original suit has ammended it to include tip and wage violation claims from eight other employees at five other restaurant in the group. As Grub Street reports , the revised suit now includes claims from workers at Otto, Casa Mono, Bar Jamon, Lupa and Tarry Lodge, who suggest that Batali and Bastianich pulled money out of the tip pool

Sources reveal that Raj Dixit , formerly of Bouley, will be the executive chef, the dining room will have a minimalist design, and the menu will have an ingredient focus and serve things like ‘Dashi made with beef jerky.’ Opening is slated for sometime in the next few weeks

For weeks we’d heard rumblings that Danny Meyer and Co. had been eyeing spaces in old the Embassy Suites complex (now known as the The Conrad) down in Battery Park City, with the possibility of maybe a Shake Shack and maybe a new location of Blue Smoke in the works. Now, Broad Sheet Daily brings word via its newsletter that at last night’s Community Board 1 meeting, Meyer himself was in attendance to confirm that he is in fact opening three restaurants in the complex, which include, yes, a Shake Shack, and yes, a Blue Smoke, but also another totally new fine dining concept which he says will be in the vein of the Union Square Cafe

Gael Greene reports that Ben Demarchelier and his father Eric (who owns Demarchelier in Midtown) are opening a small restaurant on the Lower East Side next Wednesday at 188 Suffolk St. The restaurant will have 55 seats, a rotating list of cocktails, and will offer menu items “from Grandma Demarchelier’s charcuterie and duck rillettes to Welsh rarebit…Camembert fondue and small portions of fish cooked in papillote.” It is called Oubli and will serve food until 4 AM.
