Visiting the new home of @netchick and @iamajenius

While I went to Calgary last week primarily as a family trip with my Mom, and to visit my brother, his wife and my 2.5 year old nephew, I took some time to visit with my good friends Tanya and Barry Desrosiers. I also wanted them to meet my Mom.

My summer wardrobe and cologne choices

Academic and professorial as I like to portray myself, I do still enjoy fashion and modeling. I don’t have by and large the body that a professional model would have, but I am in decent enough shape (my Mom was super sweet when she said “sweetie, when was the last time you wore something in size Small

My Mental Health Camp Vancouver 2010 recap

My Mom left this morning (she went back to Mexico) which means that I am literally back to work and hitting the ground running. The first thing I wanted to do was check back on my client work, on my research and teaching, and the various things I have to deal with as July draws to an end. A couple of days ago, my good friend and co-organizer of Mental Health Camp Vancouver 2010 posted her second recap of MHCYVR10 (you can read tweets associated with the hashtag #mhcyvr10 here )

Trattoria Italian Kitchen (@Glowbal_Group)

I had wanted my Mom to spend some more time with JT than just a brief “ hi, how are you ” so I took him and my Mom for dinner to what was the last of the Glowbal Group restaurant chain in my list of “ I have to eat here “. While I have been to the original Italian Kitchen (in downtown Vancouver, Alberni and Burrard), I hadn’t been yet to Trattoria Italian Kitchen .

PURPLE Crying Folks Call for Knitters

I have several good friends who knit, but I had not heard of knitting for a good cause in recent months, so when my friend Harriet Fancott approached me about a campaign she is working on to raise awareness around the PURPLE CRYING phase (essentially babies cry a lot in the first couple of months), I had to listen.

Sri Bistari Famous Nasi Ayam Penyet @ Changi Village

To be honest, I haven’t tried a lot of Indonesian food but I can vouch my love for Ayam Penyet, this wonderful traditional dish that originates from Subaraya. Smashed fried chicken served with rice and spicy hot sambal, so simple yet so additively delicious. Not too far away from Tampines at Changi Village is Sri Bistari

At the 6 months mark, I feel integrated again

At the end of last year, I wrote a blog entry (for those of you who have just started reading my blog, it’d probably be a good one to read) where I outlined my goal for 2010: to feel like an integrated person again . My definition of integrated person is the same that I grew up – “someone who does art, science, humanitarianism and sports, all equally well/intensely” .

Parksville through the eyes of a foreign visitor (series)

I am in beautiful Parksville, British Columbia, courtesy of Oceanside Tourism Association (Vancouver Island) thanks to a kind invitation by the always amazing Luba Plotnikoff. I had covered the UnCorked Wine and Food Festival before here on my site, and I am delighted to be returning to Parksville and Qualicum Beach, this time with my Mom in tow

Sockeye City Grill (Steveston, BC)

I was told that visiting Steveston, BC without doing the traditional ‘fish and chips’ was pretty much doing it all wrong. So, JT and I decided (albeit a tad late) to have dinner at the docks. We couldn’t get to Paijo’s because they were closing (yeah, even if it’s super sunny at 8pm, it’s still 8pm and thus some of the restaurants are closed, particularly on Sunday).

The Steveston Interurban Tram (Steveston, BC)

photo credit: Neil T I happened to walk upon a site within the community of Steveston where there was an interurban tram ( The Steveston Interurban Tram ). Considering how complicated the urban transit situation is in the Greater Vancouver area, I am totally shocked that there was an interurban tram and that urban planning folks in the region didn’t make better use of it, or make sure to keep it around.

South Vancouver and its ethnic food diversity

I went to the area around 41st Avenue (41st to 49th, on Fraser Street, NOT Little India as people may be mistaken) and was just observing the variety of ethnic foods we get in terms of restaurants in that area – Pakistani, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc. Related posts: What’s your favorite Indian food place in Vancouver

Lost Lake Park (Whistler, BC)

During our writing retreat, Mom and I were hoping to spend the whole day doing research and updating the book manuscript while at the Whistler Village . But when our laptop battery died, we decided to take a stroll around the village. We inquired about where we could go that wouldn’t require too much exertion (Mom has a bit of a knee injury and thus she can’t walk as fast or as far away as she normally would)

The Whistler Village (Whistler, BC)

Mom and I had been to the Whistler Village (in the resort municipality of Whistler, BC ), a long time ago, actually I think the last time was when she and my Auntie came to my MBA graduation. We hadn’t been to Whistler together in so many years (and in particular, almost never during the summer) that we decided we needed to roam the streets of Whistler Village. We took lots of photos (and I also realized that during the summer the mountains are used for mountain biking – something about Whistler I didn’t know!)

Win tickets to HAIR (@F_C_Productions)

No shortage of fantastic theatre this summer. And luckily, my friends from Fighting Chance Productions have decided to give me not one, not two, but THREE (3) pairs of tickets to HAIR to give away. Hair is a great musical with a talented cast of 24 current and graduated students from theatrical training institutes from across the province including Studio 58, Capilano University, Canadian College of Performing Arts and Vancouver Film School and on-stage rock band.

Southside Diner (Whistler, BC)

I had been to the Southside Diner before for dinner with Jeremy Latham and Karen Hamilton last year, when we went up to Whistler for WordCamp Whistler 2009 (the first-ever WordCamp in Whistler). I had very fond memories and when I decided to go on a writing retreat to Whistler , I decided I needed to show my Mom this cute diner

Win tickets to Itsazoo’s Robin Hood at the Queen Elizabeth Park

photo credit: Digital_Rampage The summer always brings amazing theatre to Vancouver, and very inspired and versatile, multi-talented approaches to delivering these performances. Last year, I attended Road to Canterbury, put together by the same folks who bring to you this time Robin Hood, with a Vancouver-flavor and twist.

A recent visit to Q Wok Nyonya Curry House at Taman Bayu Mutiara near Autocity had us delighted over the good and affordable home cooked traditional Nyona dishes. Theatre Under the Stars at Malkin Bowl

When I first moved to Vancouver I wondered what to do, and people who were doing their MBA coursework with me recommended Theatre Under the Stars . An institution in Vancouver, Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) has been the source of amazing entertainment and great theatrical performances. This summer, the TUTS season goes from July 9th to August 21st

Siam Road (Jalan Siam) Charcoal Char Koay Teow

The Char Koay Teow stall along Siam Road, Penang has gotta be one of the best in town. And a good thing about it is you won’t be charged exorbitantly for a plate of Char Koay Teow – something that is supposed to be cheap and affordable but is fast becoming a gourmet priced food
