Lighthouse Park (West Vancouver)

Despite the fact that I’ve been to Lighthouse Park more times than I can remember, I never wrote about it. But today I was browsing through my Flickr set and found a few photos from the very first time I visited WITH a digital camera (I had been before without a camera). To get to Lighthouse Park we took Marine Drive (the North Vancouver version) and followed it Then we turned left on Beacon Lane

You Should Hear How She Talks About You by Melissa Manchester

Most people who think about Melissa Manchester seem to recall “Through the Eyes of Love”, the theme from Ice Castles (the movie), a beautiful song indeed. But the one song that earned Melissa Manchester a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance is this one (“ You Should Hear How She Talks About You “), which I actually was obsessed with when I was a child, because I could NEVER find out the name of this song.

Seafood Char Koay Kak @ Batu Lanchang Market Food Court

Frying skill aside, two of the main differences betweeen a good and normal Char Koay Kak are the cooking oil and soy sauce used. In the old days, Char Koay Kak stalls used only lard to bring out the most of the aroma and flavor.

SHIFTED (@getshifted)

photo credit: NPCA Photos My Dad’s birthday was yesterday (August 29th) and I didn’t get to talk to him until today, Monday, but I’m glad I did, because our conversation is entirely related to SHIFTED. Dad and I were reminiscing about the many times when I have faced defeat and what I have done in the face of adversity. One of those times was, as a matter of fact, having to rewrite my entire doctoral dissertation

‘Keh Liao’ Penang Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee) @ Old Green House, Burma Road

Old Green House restaurant (老青屋) is a popular place among Penangites to have Hokkien Mee (or Prawn Noodle in other Malaysian states) either as dinner or supper. Although the noodle is also available in the morning at another ‘day shift’ stall, most of the working people only have the opportunity to savor it after working

MyPlace Laptop Table (review)

I have been doing a lot of cleaning up and getting rid of stuff that I no longer use over the summer (particularly when my mom came, because I wanted to have my place tidy and ready for when she visited me. One of the things I hadn’t really had a chance to use lately was my “MyPlace” laptop workstation (pictured). My cousin M gave it to me last Christmas as she knew that I needed it for when I work at home.

Trees Organic Cafe (Gastown)

Boasting the title of the cafe with “the best cheesecake in Vancouver), Trees Organic Cafe is a pretty nice coffee shop. I had been a frequent customer of the Granville and West Hastings location, up until when I discovered that there was another location in Gastown (on Water Street). Minna took me there for cheesecake and coffee.

Blue Surge @Theatre_20 (theatre review)

While fully admitting that I was coming into Blue Surge expecting it to be a fantastic work (I have seen the work of Sabrina Evertt and her team at Twenty Something Productions before, with Prodigals – read my review here ), I always try to enter a new play devoid of any preconceptions. I was definitely not disappointed

Spread the Feeling and Hug a Bear with Kraft Peanut Butter at Vancouver Aquarium

photo credit: -mrsraggle- I am well known for giving pretty damn good bear hugs, and while I’m not someone who eats much peanut butter, I do know it’s a staple of Canadian families’ breakfast. Lots of my friends who were born and raised in Canada (and even my family members in the US) do eat peanut butter and jam sandwiches frequently. So when Kraft contacted me about their campaign, I really liked it

Watching the sunset at Second Beach in Stanley Park

Last night (thanks, in no small part to my not-so-good ability to pinpoint a meeting location for the Vancouver Blogger Meetup) our meetup was rather small (but it felt so right, at the same time!). Erika Rathje, Jan Karlsbjerg and I showed up (and as he usually does, my friend Jan has a summary of what we talked about at the August 2010 Vancouver Blogger Meetup)

My Fall 2010 schedule (for PR pros and journalists alike)

As I have mentioned before, I am back to teaching undergraduates at UBC this fall (1 course in September-December 2010, 2 courses in January-April 2011), which means that the social media personality will have to take a backseat to the academic and educator . That said, I try to make sure that PR people know where I stand and what my time availability is for the (limited number of) engagements I could possibly attend. So, just so that everyone knows, I will be pretty much unavailable any time before 5pm on Mondays and Wednesdays (pitches thus would be most welcome on Thursdays and Fridays ).

The return of the liveblog?

photo credit: Stephen Cummings It’s been a relatively long while since I have liveblogged the way I used to in 2008 and 2009, but I have always (well, at least since I began dipping my toes into the social media world) thought that there is value to having an event liveblogged. I no longer have the luxury of enough time to liveblog events and thus have been really happy whenever someone else takes on that role.

Phor Thor (Hungry Ghost Festival) @ Jalan Pasar, Bukit Mertajam

I bet you already know that it’s the Hungry Ghost Festival currently. During the Ghost Month the realms of Heaven and Hell are open, which releases ghosts, spirits including those of the deceased ancestors to roam the living world. So, the Chinese are often advised to stay at home and prevent from going out late

Watercolours #VQFF (@queerfilmfest)

My heart broke along with Danny Wheeler’s (Tye Olson). In a well-crafted story of coming of age, Watercolours (David Oliveras, USA, 2008) shows an often-told story of nerdy/geeky boy (Danny, Tye Olson in a super sweet depiction of an artistic geek) who falls in love with bad boy, jock type (Carter, Kyle Clare in a portrayal that annoys the heck out of me – a testament to his good acting)

My Europe Trip 2010 – Rome, Italy

Being the center of Christianity’s largest denomination, Rome has many interesting churches and home to some of the most beautiful ones in the world. It is advisable to spend at least three nights to visit the Ancient City, where many impressive Roman monuments are still standing.
