Always Buy ‘Em From A Farm

Those of you who frequently dine at the restaurant will notice that many of our vegetables are sourced from the Amish Farms in Path Valley, Pennsylvania.  Last week during their delivery to the restaurant, our friends at the farm, left behind a special poem they had written for us.  It is not only humorous but very cleverly written.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we have! Always Buy 'Em From A Farm Is your kale real stale? Is it lookin' kinda pale? Do your beans and peas have a hairy green disease?

Stylish mud-proofing at Glastonbury 2009

The summer’s most glamorous festival is almost here. That might sound like an oxymoron, but this weekend at Glastonbury will see more sequins than the Strictly reunion tour. And, if you haven’t been able to secure suitably stylish accommodation at Charlton House down the road (or Babington House half an hour away), you may find yourself facing the fields with some trepidation

OLS Week 3: BLT Bonanza

This week’s One Local Summer meal(s) were inspired by the beautiful Crispino iceberg lettuce I bought from Wayward Seed Farm at the farmers market last Saturday. With lettuce so fresh and crisp, it was just begging for me to make a BLT with mostly local ingredients. The bacon was from Thurn’s, the tomatoes from WishWell Farms, and the bread was Vienna bread from The Andersons.

Wednesday’s Delicious Deal: Morton’s

Morton’s ribeye Morton’s downtown and Morton’s in Reston just launched a three-course $25 lunch menu. Start out with lobster bisque, baked five onion soup, or one of the restaurant’s salads. Entrée choices include grilled prime ribeye with garlic butter and mashed potatoes, grilled colossal shrimp and sea scallops with grilled vegetables and buerre blanc over sauteed spinach, or grilled Northwest king salmon with sauteed garlic green beans.

Food, Inc.

Last Monday, I was fortunate to spend the morning with my friend Wendy Rieger of NBC 4.  Wendy was here with filmmakers Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, discussing their new movie, Food, Inc., which reveals surprising facts about the food we eat and how it's produced.  The movie opens in Washington, DC this weekend. While here, Wendy and I spent some time chatting about the farm-to-table concept at Blue Duck Tavern and the benefits of working directly with regional farmers.  To see the full interview, please watch Wendy's "Going Green" segment, airing tomorrow during the 5pm newscast.  I believe it also be online at nbcwashington.com .

Review: Louie’s Grill

It’s inevitable that Louie’s Grill, the fairly new Tex-Mex/Cuban fusion bistro in Hilliard, gets compared to Starliner Diner – they share quite a few things – many menu items are identical, they’re both located on Cemetary Road, and Louie, the chef/owner, was Starliner Diner’s head chef for 12 years. But that’s where the similarities end. The truth of the matter is that Louie’s is bigger, cleaner, more flexible, and just executes the food much better with a smile instead of a snarl

Brunch at Blue Duck

Once again it looks as though it may rain in the late afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday.  So why not take advantage of the sun during the earlier parts of the day and enjoy a leisurely brunch on the Blue Duck Tavern terrace.  We've added several new menu items using the season's freshest ingredients.  Such dishes include the Sour Dough Baked Pancake with port poached figs, fig molasses and clotted cream; Baked Eggs with oil preserved tomatoes, cured tuna roe and creme fraiche; Croque Madame with country bacon and sauce mornay; and Short Rib Hash with olive oil poached eggs and horseradish sauce.  These items go great with our Ginger Lemonade or Cherry Iced Tea , both part of our summer cocktail menu.

6 Tips For Dining Out With Kids

The husband-and-wife blogging team of Jason and Amy Storch offer some wonderful guidance on dining out with children. They should know — in addition to being parents to two boys, Jason is the founder and editor of DC Foodies , and Amy writes the fabulously candid mama blog Amalah . When Amy and I had our first son (Noah), we took four or five weeks off from eating out and did a ton of takeout and delivery.

WaPo: Masa 14 Coming To 14th Street

Back in April, a rumor surfaced on donrockwell.com that Kaz Okochi of Kaz Sushi Bistro and Richard Sandoval of Zengo (and more restaurants around the country ) were partnering on a 14th Street restaurant. This afternoon over on the GOG Blog, Tom Sietsema got a green light from Okochi that the deal for the Latin-Asian-flavored Masa 14 is on. Which for this neighborhod resident is wonderful news

A Rainy Day at the Market

Yesterday afternoon, I visited the Penn Quarter Freshfarm Market for my first chef demo.  Sadly, it rained and rained and then rained some more. As Brian blogged yesterday, I made a fresh salad with apples, watercress, almonds and sheep's milk cheese, and decided to bring along some pork to cook at the table.  I believe the smell of pork and butter cooking lured visitors out of their homes and offices to visit our table. Regardless of the weather, we still had a fairly nice turnout and it was a great opportunity to check out what the local farmers were offering.  A big thank you also to Maddy Beckwith from Freshfarm Market, who helped coordinate everything with us.  My next demo will be at the Dupont Circle Freshfarm Market on Sunday, July 26.  Hopefully it will be a beautiful summer day.
