Dean Street Townhouse interior (photo from the restaurant via Zagat.com) Saturday night. Where to go? Soho. Looking for someplace stylish and fun but that also serves good food. A tall order. Cue the Dean Street Townhouse , which the pros ( like the anonymous folks at TimeOut ) have universally praised, and which the bloggers have given mixed reviews . One thing everyone can agree on: the place deserves its high marks for decor and buzz. The be-hatted man at the door at DTH reminded me of the bowler-hatted guy greeting diners at Galvin La Chapelle , and I do tend to like what the Galvin brothers get up to. When I stepped through the doorway into the restaurant, I immediately felt like having a good time. A good Saturday night pick.

At Mr & Mrs Smith, we love unearthing London’s coolest events and goings-on – so last night, we roved down to Soho for a sneak preview of LA-born artist Haidee Becker ’s new pop-up gallery – in a former brothel, no less. Haidee happens to be mother to one of London’s most talented restaurateurs, Jacob Kenedy, chef-patron of much-feted Soho eatery Bocca di Lupo.

The south-eastern Italian region of Apulia is often called the ‘heel of Italy’, in reference to the country’s boot-like shape. The busy port of Bari is the area’s capital and Italy ’s second largest southern city, after Naples . Bari’s industrial past has often led to it being overlooked by holiday makers but this vibrant urban destination has a lot to offer – both in the city itself and in the pretty towns and villages surrounding it. Here are the top five things to do in the area. Bari Vecchia The tangled network of crooked streets and passageways that make up Bari’s old town is commonly known as Bari Vecchia . Home to many of the city’s churches and historic buildings, the area is a beautiful example of ancient medieval architecture .

Scotland’s capital city may be overflowing with cosy hotels, tempting restaurants and cheerful locals but like any ancient place, the city has a dark and eerie past. Walking ghost tours Perhaps the best way to experience Edinburgh ’s grisly history is by joining one of the many walking tours that take place in the Old Town every night. These chilling tours wind through the dark alleys and haunted streets of the city’s underbelly, delving deep into tales of Scotland ’s rich and spine-tingling past. The tours set off at various times throughout the evening, getting progressively scarier as the night goes on. Many of the earlier departures are suitable for younger children , although it’s always best to check first

Owing its very existence to the majestic River Thames, London is intimately connected to all things maritime. As the heart of the British Empire, the city was once one of the most important ports in Europe , where ships would set sail for exotic destinations across the globe. The extensive Victorian docks fell into disuse in the 1960s but a massive regeneration project has seen a thriving business district spring up around the iconic Canary Wharf tower – the tallest building in the UK .

This weekend, another Hallmark-friendly holiday approaches, but this one really is worth celebrating. For runners the gruelling 26.2 miles of a marathon is the ultimate test. Pushing on past the ‘ wall ’ and feeling the adrenaline rush as you make it across the finishing line makes the sore feet, blisters and relentless hours of training no more than a distant memory. Marathons are held across the world and runners are increasingly combining the sporting challenge with the opportunity to explore new places – although it’s probably best to avoid sampling the local hospitality until after the race. The London Marathon is perhaps the most popular of the European races but it is hugely oversubscribed every year, making it very difficult to secure a place. Here are five of the best alternatives.

First, the good news. Both Draft Houses, that’s the original, previously known as the Westbridge, on Battersea Bridge Road, and the latest on Northcote Road, have an absolutely stunning selection of beers, right up there with the best in London (and possibly only just behind the Rake in Borough Market). Not only are the drinks well selected, well kept and of impressive style and variety, they are also, from what I can gather, pretty reasonably priced.

A flight to Geneva, a train to Martigny and a 100 minutes of driving will get you to Switzerland’s sunniest ski resort: Verbier . Nothing prepared me for quite how special a few days here would be: it’s upmarket but down-to-earth; sophisticated yet unsnooty; and when the weather’s right, it’s breathtakingly beautiful. This weekend, it was fantastically snowy and conditions were perfect; the chaps hit the slopes while we went snowshoeing, spaing and swimming. We stayed at Le Ti Chalet , one of Smith Ski’s luxury Verbier lodges , where the attention to detail and everything-thought-of service were first-class in every way; chalet girls Sally and Marcelle were as helpful as they were delightful

March 17th honors Saint Patrick, the most recognized Patron Saint in Ireland. Until Dublin launched it’s multi-day Patrick’s festival in 1996, however, celebrations in the country were nearly non-existent. Most of what we think of when it comes to Saint Patrick’s day is actually American, drinking green beer, eating corn hash and wearing “Kiss me, I’m Irish!” t-shirts in particular.

Reviewing a “popup” restaurant can seem at best pointless, at worst almost cruel. With such limited availability you’re very unlikely to be able to use the review as a guide to eat out, and there’s a danger the whole post could just seem like a protracted “look what you missed out on” taunt

cooks at Needoo Grill, hard at work It’s taken me months to get to Needoo Grill , mostly because it’s located just around the corner from its famous sibling, New Tayyabs . In other words, if I’m in Whitechapel craving tandoor, I usually end up at tried-and-true Tayyabs despite its brutally-long queues.

If there’s a better afternoon to be had anywhere than hacking apart a variety of top quality meat, then I’d like to know about it. Allens of Mayfair, at 117 Mount Street – that’s just opposite the Connaught and a few doors down from Nicky Clarke hairdressers, to give you an idea of the area – run butchery classes at their stunning Victorian shop every Wednesday at 1pm and attract a remarkable variety of punters (50/50 male/female most surprisingly) keen to learn more about that mysterious journey between the fresh animal carcass and the neatly trimmed cuts on your plate. I was lucky enough to be invited to this fascinating place with a handful of other food bloggers to see how badly I could disgrace myself when let loose with a chainmail glove and a dangerously sharp knife

Shanghai is a modern metropolis, famous for its never-ending construction and towering skyscrapers. Yet, just 180 kilometers away, lies Hangzhou , the capital of the Zhejiang province. Culturally rich and renowned for it’s picturesque beauty, Hangzhou makes for the perfect relaxing day trip away from the hustle and bustle. Getting there The best and fastest way to get the Hangzhou is by train. The D train , “Dong Che Zhu” departs from the South Shanghai railway station and arrives at the Hangzhou station within 1 hour and 40 minutes. The N and T trains are slightly slower, arriving within 2 to 2 ½ hours, and the K trains are even slower. It’s best to plan your return and buy your return ticket ahead of time, as the last finishes its run early in the evening. After arriving at the Hangzhou train station, it’s a quick cab ride into the city. What to see Hangzhou is famous for the beautiful West Lake . It is associated with Chinese romantic poetry and was well loved over the span of multiple dynasties. Chinese tourists flock here to walk around the tree lined 15 kilometer circumference. There are ten traditional scenic spots along the lake, along with ponds, springs, temples and tombs . At one of the main entrances, you can sit down for drinks at Costa coffee and a number of other nice restaurants before starting on your walk. Bicycles can be rented for 10 RMB per hour (with a 200 yuan deposit) and can be returned to any bike location. Boat rides along te lake are also offered for a fee. You will not have time to see all of the lake in one day, but you can easily spend a few hours there.
