Koya (udon noodle bar) I love noodle soups. So when I saw this glowing review of Koya in last week’s TimeOut, I hopped to it. Thanks to the TimeOut effect, which I’d expected, there was a lengthy queue at Koya when I arrived at 7:30 last Friday evening. Luckily, Koya sits next door to Mooli’s , so while waiting, Jon and I snacked on a dry, sitting-around-too-long beef kati roll before wandering a little further down the street to try some Roman-style pizza al taglio at Adagio . Sadly, our slice of sausage pizza was also dried out and sitting-around-too-long. kaiso salad (£4) and onsen tamago (£2) at Koyaprawn tempura udon noodle soup (£9) After 40 minutes, we landed seats. It was clear the staff was overwhelmed by the crowds as some tables sat empty for a while before a server could clean up and seat new customers

The absolute best thing about Tom’s Terrace is the triple cooked chips with truffle oil and parmesan. Phwoar. Crispy, fluffy, hot, rich and decadent all at once, I would eat them for breakfast.

“Try the Grand Union burgers,” someone, I can’t remember who, suggested the other week. Come to think of it, it may have been Grand Union themselves, but as I’ve mentioned, I’m not doing freebies anymore. There’s part of me that wishes I was brazen and morally deficient enough to suck back as many free meals as possible and to hell with the consequences – in fact, there’s quite a large part of me that is – but the exhausted, abused white angel on the other shoulder has just enough influence to render any such invitations sufficiently awkward so as to be no fun at all.

You may be hearing a lot about Thai food in the coming months. Harrods, in whose food halls I’ve spent many a happy afternoon (though obviously never buying anything) are running a Thai promotion from 4th May until 6th June, and there is going to be a large Thai Festival in Trafalgar Square on the 5th June.

One of my favourite places to eat within walking distance of my office – in fact, come to think of it, the only decent place to eat within walking distance of my office, is 32 Great Queen Street. It’s a lovely, buzzy place with charming staff and tasty, uncomplicated food and I’ve never had a bad meal there.

What must it be like, I wonder, being told you’re the best in the world? Or rather, what must it be like to believe it? It has to be a somewhat surreal experience for the staff at the Fat Duck, as they polish the cutlery and vacuum the carpets and shake down the tablecloths, to be aware essentially that this is it

Mien Tay Battersea is a wonderful restaurant, serving spectacular food at miniscule prices, with staff so smiley and warm you want to take them home with you. It would be a wonderful restaurant anywhere in London, of course, but as I’ve mentioned before, its location on Lavender Hill is nothing short of a miracle, and has probably single-handedly raised the nearby house prices to a statistically significant degree. But it’s too easy to forget that back where it all began for Vietnamese food in London, on the Kingsland Road in the East End, there are a selection of restaurants who regularly give Mien Tay a run for its money, and fuel the virtuous circle of competition and higher standards that we’ve come to expect from this most exciting and satisfying of cuisines.

Having snapped up this pretty little barrel-shaped Charolais in Hamish Johnston last weekend, in a bit of a rush to get back to the house and light up the barbeque before the heavens opened, I assumed that I could Google the important details at a later date, tack on a tasting note or two, and call it a review.

beef tartare, pickled kohlrabi, black truffle sauce Last Friday, I celebrated my friend L’s birthday in style with dinner at the Greenhouse , Michelin-starred in Mayfair. It wasn’t our first choice, but we’d struck out at the Ledbury and Marcus Wareing , and although I’d never before heard much about the Greenhouse, because of several strong recs in comments left on this blog, we gave it a go

Ljubljana, like many cities in the former Eastern Bloc, has enjoyed a renaissance since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the eastward expansion of the EU. At first, tourism was based almost entirely on the low prices on offer but the city’s place in the market has matured recently and while it is still relatively cheap, its other assets have come into their own

Martin Miller doesn’t like birthdays, doesn’t really like weddings, and isn’t sure if he likes hotels (other than Miller’s Residence of course). He used to like partying – still does every now and then – loves a G&T (made with Martin Miller’s Gin ), prefers his bedrooms on the cosy side and has a magnetic attraction to big piles of bricks, especially ones itching for a refurb.
