Eat Al Fresco Tom’s Terrace

AL FRESCO DINING AT TOM’S TERRACE Recently voted one of the best places to eat al fresco in the UK*, Tom’s Terrace at Somerset House offers the ultimate in summer dining in central London. Tom Aiken’s latest venture, Tom’s Terrace, enjoys one of the finest vistas in London, situated on the river terrace of Somerset House overlooking the Thames. Situated under a futuristic canopy, with relaxed, modern seating and an informal lounge area, Tom’s Terrace offers diners a simple summer menu which includes Coronation Crab Salad, Chilled Gazpacho, Grilled Paillard of Chicken Salad, Hot Smoked Loch Duart Salmon and a delectable range of desserts such as Eton Mess and Poached Strawberries (poached in mint and Champagne).

Lunya, Liverpool

Following the triumph of a meal at Merchants the last time I was in Liverpool, it’s perhaps no surprise that my lunch at Lunya, a new Catalan restaurant in the L1 complex, failed to live up to expectations. But the very existence of Lunya in Liverpool says more about changing attitudes to food in the city – and of the increasing confidence of Liverpool restaurateurs – than was reflected in the performance of the kitchen on the day. A restaurant like this, serving bold Spanish dishes using local North West ingredients, should be applauded for its ambition at least, and anywhere attempting to sell top-end hand-carved Iberico ham at £15 a plate to cynical Liverpudlians needs all the encouragement it can get

Brian Silva’s Cocktail Masterclass at Rules, Covent Garden

Food bloggers are often accused of a herd mentality, of obsessing over the latest fads and new openings and of flooding the blogosphere with identical reviews at the same time. Of course, when the national critics do the same , as when Bar Boulud and Roux at Parliament Square opened in the same week and every single paper contained a review of either one or the other, nobody seems to care. I’d like to think it’s because people are so used to the stunning variety and engaging, impartial comment on the best food blogs that any similarities in content stand out like a sore thumb, whereas nobody really reads the national press to find out what a restaurant is like; the actual subject matter is secondary to a good read.

Style monitor: Amanda Wakeley’s weekend bag

With pieces in every wardrobe worth a walk in – from Hollywood royalty to just, well, royalty – Amanda Wakeley’s style queen status is undisputed (and, as demonstrated by her OBE earlier this year, even the Queen agrees). We’re currently running a competition with Amanda’s sought-after fashion label – there’s £600 worth of chic womenswear up for grabs, as well as the same again for the gents from Gieves & Hawkes , and a two-night stay at the stately Lower Slaughter Manor in the heart of the Cotswolds .

Viajante, Bethnal Green

Viajante's open kitchen I thought that by waiting a couple of months to eat at Viajante that my blog post wouldn’t seem horribly redundant, but it turns out I’m not the only blogger who waited until the opening hype died down. During the last two weeks, Gourmet Traveller and London Eater have also sampled chef Nuno Mendes ‘s goodies, so I encourage you to click on those links above for stunning photos and a detailed rundown of the food. In light of both those recent and excellent posts, I’ll keep mine light on the food descriptions and instead leave you with captioned photos and a few general thoughts.

Listen up: TuneSmith’s musical recommendations for June

Our TuneSmith , Rob Wood, the ears behind our seductive CD collection , selects the first instalment of Smith’s soundtrack to summer… ALBUM OF THE MONTH Down the Way by Angus & Julia Stone When You need to put things in perspective Why It’s life-affirming, soul-enhancing music These Australian siblings don’t make complicated music. Theirs is an art born out of relatively simple songcraft. Yet somehow their folky singer-songwriter approach to music-making still sounds like one of a kind

Amsterdam Coffee Shops

One of the more popular tourist destinations in Western Europe is the city of Amsterdam , the capital and largest city of the Netherlands .  Rich in history and culture, it is Europe’s 6 th largest metropolitan regions.  However, one of the most significant features and favorite attractions for many visitors to the city are the “coffee shops” in Amsterdam.  The history of the coffee shop dates back nearly four decades to the early 1970’s when it was finally realized that the war on drugs was futile where the Dutch were concerned. If you are not familiar with the concept of the Amsterdam coffee shop, it is not the coffee that is the favorite menu item.  It is Cannabis or as it is more commonly known, marijuana .  Currently, there are over 300 coffee shops in Amsterdam, most of which feature numerous varieties of marijuana to enjoy while drinking your favorite cup of coffee .  Additionally, there are no issues with legalities due to the relaxed Dutch culture .  The following is a list of some of the recommended coffee shops to venture into while visiting Amsterdam

The Meatwagon at the Florence, Herne Hill

It was my friend Helen Graves who first brought the mysterious Yianni to the attention of London burger fans. An odd little enterprise, he travels across America for most of the year, collecting recipes, tips and traditions from as many different independent food outlets as he can, and then returns to the UK and attempts to recreate them, not from a permanent shop or even a hired kitchen, but a rickety looking mobile hotplate on wheels called the Meatwagon

Travel gallery: the road to the Rockies – part 2

Mr & Mrs Smith’s very own frontierswoman, Mary , continues her journey to the west , camera at the ready, and drops in on some of the hottest hotels in the neighbourhood… Next stops: the Ranch at Rock Creek and Amangani The Ranch at Rock Creek opened last week (we move fast at Smith). We stopped in on a covert research mission here as the hotel was officially kicking off with a very private, very confidentiality-waiverish exclusive hire… so we snuck our way in to the hottest thing to hit the Rockies and, man oh man, is this place somewhere to shout about! Anyone with a luxury Wild West  vacation in mind should giddy on up faster than you can say Pocahontas. On another bizarre, small-world side note… I actually bumped into a famous fashion designer friend (and Smith hotel reviewer ) out here in middle-of-nowhere Montana, completely by accident

Cheese of the Month – Taleggio "La Baita"

Over the past few months I had found myself buying the same three or four cheeses on every single journey to the cheese shop. There’s nothing wrong with that I suppose, they’re good cheeses, together they make a good, varied cheeseboard, and I’m never disappointed. They are, in case you’re wondering, Comté, Valencay goat’s, Stinking Bishop and Roquefort – from blue to pungent, soft to firm, cow’s to goat’s, all bases covered
