This summer, we jumped in our pink Cadillac and hit the road. As we indicated a few months back , our Stateside voyage across to the last frontier was a hotel hunt of epic proportions and turned in some treasure… We couldn’t believe our luck when we stumbled upon Dunton Hot Springs (left), a one-time ghost town, sat snug in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains . The old mining village has been converted into cosy boutique cabins, and you can still have a drink in the original Saloon, where former patrons have included Butch and Sundance.

Switzerland is more famous for cheese than for vegetarian specialities, but Zurich has some excellent veggie restaurants. The most famous is the Hiltl, founded over a hundred years ago. Most of the vegetarian restaurants in Zurich serve mainly lacto-ovo-vegetarian food, so vegans should check with the staff for vegan options.

Having spent many years in London without enjoying even so much as a half-decent sushi meal never mind one I would consider going back for, the last few months have been nothing short of revelatory. First, Ten Ten Tei in Soho back in March provided a teasing glimpse of a higher standard of sushi. Then, the biggie – Asakusa , a restaurant so vibrant, so exciting, and (perhaps most crucially) so reasonably priced that it has become my new benchmark – the sushi restaurant to judge all others in the capital.

I get lost on YouTube! While perusing the internet yesterday, I found this old show that Chef Marco Pierre White did in the late 80′s on British television. Apart from being a wildly fascinating character study, it is very cool to see the man cooking in the Harvey’s kitchen – the place of so much lore. His technique is amazing and the speed at which he moves during service is something else

Of all the strange fads and trends that sweep through the Twittering classes of London, I never thought the concept of the underground restaurant would ever catch on. It seemed like such an odd idea, paying someone to host a dinner party and being forced to make small-talk with a bunch of people you’d never met; and after all, if I wanted to pay £20 for my dinner aren’t there enough overground restaurants in London to take your money, and provide a bigger menu and a nice quiet table for two by the window into the bargain? And yet, persuaded by more open-minded and enthusiastic people than myself (hard to believe such people exist, I know), in March last year I found myself knocking on the door of a handsome Victorian townhouse somewhere in Kilburn, and ushered into the front room of Ms Marmite Lover’s original Underground Restaurant along with 20 or 30 others

Arang Korean restaurant/barbecue sits on Golden Square in Soho – a large, spacious cantine-style room with tables lit by what appear to be neon snooker table lamps each of which has an industrial ventilation tube zooming out of it that hovers, Bladrunner style, over your table’s hotplate. The hotplate is the centre of fun at Arang, although by all means do not limit your choices to the barbecue section as the starters, noodle and rice dishes are all worth a go, including a stellar Bi Bim Bap. The staff are smiley and will help you pronounce the tongue twisters on the menu without the sort of patronising glare from l’enfer you might get in a French restaurant when ordering wine with an English accent, they are also incredibly efficient with food arriving in a smooth and steady flow and every little pot of pickles or dipping sauce explained properly.

Fowey, an achingly picturesque village on the south coast of Cornwall, is a fantastic little spot to spend a bank holiday weekend. Blessed with charming narrow streets, expansive harbour views and some lovely old pubs serving great local beers, it has a lot going for it, and you’d have to be incredibly unlucky to have a bad time here. The secret of a good holiday, I always think, is the management of expectations.

Vinoteca What do you say about a restaurant in which the food is incredible, the service exceptional and the wine selection exciting but from where you want to escape because of the noise of customers having such a good time is just too much? As with many places serving food today (I purposely choose to avoid definitions such as restaurant, gastro-pub, trattoria etc as this applies to all), you get the feeling they never thought of soundproofing the location when decorating and as so often happens today, noise is confused with atmosphere. I might come across as “difficult” but I really would have loved the sound of laughter, people talking over each other to be heard to have been broken by something, anything
