91. Takiey, Tairamachi [6.6.09]

A dull green top undermines Mina as we spool from Yutenji to Gakugei-daigaku, the stations that frame me in Tokyo. The latter is a curious spot: it is where we have been recently enjoying our whales with imported Yoshikai’s, and also an unexpected Canadian momento store, replete with fossils from Calgery, bears in red coats and waffles and stone rings. Such things are nations made of: it was great to see Mina in her territory at last –and the vivid turquoise top she had just bought

Under the Knife: Radici (Portsmouth, NH)

When one travels to the seacoast – Portsmouth, N.H., for instance – an absurdly ferocious bombardment of run-of-the-mill seafood restaurants is expected, if not unavoidable. Each of these restaurants (hopefully) cooks ingredients that were caught the very same day. In this way, such restaurants manage to elevate themselves from mediocrity to better-than-average.

Under the Knife: The Cottage (Wellesley)

Sometimes you find the most incredible things in remarkably un-incredible places. For instance, a few years ago, around thirty (possible) Jackson Pollock paintings were found in a random man’s garage. So, despite my initial hesitation when I approached The Cottage , tucked into a unassuming shopping plaza in Wellesley complete with its very own Stop and Shop, I thought that perhaps this could be one of those remarkable finds.

Sushi Say, Willesden Green

It began, as these things often do, with a challenge. I had never had a sushi meal in London to match the places I’d visited in Boston or New York, and was doubtful there was anywhere that could impress for a reasonable amount of money (so that’s Sake No Hana and Umu out, then). Suggestions came in, amongst them Sushi Say in Willesden Green, a long-time local favourite with some rave reviews, and I was optimistic.

I have foound a very good culinary mag, and it’s not available here

Browsing through some storage space in Rockwell, I chanced upon a magazine that at first glance looked like some overstuffed pretentious fodder. But closer inspection of the cover revealed caricatures of accomplished chefs.January 2009 issue of Cuisine and Wine Asia captivated me from cover to cover. I was able to glean some great recipes, and got first look, albeit remotely, on the famed The Big

Slow-Cooker Red Beans and Rice

We have long heard stories of traditional New Orlean’s red beans and rice but the closest that either of us had ever come to trying the dish was a box of Zataran’s rice. This particular recipe arrived at our door in the latest issue of Cook’s Country and was a perfect opportunity for us to try red beans and rice because it was a relatively hands-off crock-pot version of the dish. Cooking on low, this dish took 4 hours in the crock-pot to fully cook, which means it…

Extreme Fine Dining

It came and gone, the highlight of current year, the reunion of sorts with my ‘other’ family, in a span of 16 days which seemed like 16 minutes. Time flies when you are having fun, is the age old adage that sadly, is true. On cheery note though, we had amazing fun! CS, SH and RH flew here from UK and we had a short stint before gathering again all in Taiping along with CC who flew from Jakarta

And in the news today………..

……..was a story of a local man who, whilst texting, entered the 3rd floor lift, to find that there was no lift there!!! Although lucky to be alive, he did break a leg, his collarbone, and 3 ribs. It’s odd, however, that a spokesman for the hospital described his condition as ‘comfortable’!!! Well, hang on a bit. With his neck in a brace, leg in plaster, and practically half of his ribcage poking out of his chest, ‘comfortable’ would be one of the last words i’d use to describe his condition!! Its the same with the police

Food in Unusual Places: Rolls Done Right at Beijing Tokyo Sushi Bar

by Benjamin Margolis For the 50,000 people who work and learn in the techie neighborhood of Kendall Square in Cambridge, there are several places to get a quick lunch. Few places are as quick as Beijing Tokyo , where if you don’t have your order in your mind within one second of being asked, they will stare you down and make you feel uncomfortable.

The Angry Whopper from Burger King

Less heat than expected — but plenty of flavor! It’s no secret, I’m a Burger King fan. After seeing the recent television commercials for BK’s new Angry Whopper , I was anxious to try it. The advertisements show people freaking out and getting angry from all the heat, but knowing that advertisements and reality are two totally separate things, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
