Miami Cheap Eats

Seems like everywhere you turn, everyone is feeling the crunch. With tough times like these, people are trying to pinch those pennies wherever they can, especially on vacation. Certainly in a city like Miami , that attracts millions of tourists year round because of its warm weather, beaches and non-stop nightlife ; you can definitely burn a hole in your wallet if you’re not careful

Bocca di Lupo, Soho (revisited)

fried goodies: suppli (£2), bocconcini (£2.50), artichoke a la Giudia (£5), and in the background, a fried courgette flower (£4) When I was at Bocca di Lupo a year ago , I had a lot of fun, but the service and food were a mixed bag.  I left thinking that while I wouldn’t object to going again, I also wasn’t dying to revisit. However, not having been to Bocca di Lupo and being a lover of all things Italian, Jon has long wanted to go, and with the recent buzz around good-quality, low-to-mid-priced Italians  opening in London, the time seemed right to revisit BdL.  Which is how we found ourselves there for dinner last week

What’s cooking at 21212? Quickfire Q&A with chef Paul Kitching

Here at Smith HQ, when we’re not living, breathing and loving boutique hotels, we’re drooling over delectable dinners in London , long lunches in Languedoc , superior coffee in the capital and wine-tasting events – even wedding cakes made of cheese . (We take our ‘tastemaker’ title quite seriously, you see.) Typing is mainly practised one-handed, to enable a non-stop snack stream to pass unhindered into our greedy (but still oh-so-selective) bellies. In short, we’ve decided to put more foodie posts on the blog menu, and resurrect our series of interviews with the food world’s Michelin-starred great and good (see our previous interviews with the awesome Alain Ducasse and mighty Michael Caines ).

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, and Egg-free Amaranth Scone Recipe

I think we might have to rename the Book of Yum to “the Book of Amaranth” if I keep this up. I can’t help it. I’m eating amaranth every four days, thanks to this crazy allergen-free, gluten-free diet that I’m on.

Incognico, Covent Garden

I’m sure there are restaurants that have a straightforward, charitable reason for putting out 50% off deals on Toptable. I’m sure there are plenty of sadly overlooked but nevertheless lovely restaurants, serving fabulous food, which find themselves in a position to lay on a very generous discount, keeping regular clientele happy and drumming up a bit of extra interest from those on a slightly tighter budget

Asian Ramen Slaw

Some dishes are perennial potluck foods just because they taste good, carry well, and are popular with the masses. This one has appeared in countless church cookbooks for those very reasons, and only takes minutes to throw together. Ramen Noodle Coleslaw recipe courtesy GAGirl’s Recipes Slaw: 2 – 1 pound bags of cole slaw or broccoli slaw (or similar amount of cabbage, red cabbage, carrots, broccoli, etc

Event: Goodale Park Music Series 8/8/2010

I think of all the weeks that the Goodale Park Music Series has gone on this summer, my favorite theme had to be on August 8th, when Bethia of Hungry Woolf hosted a “Grown in Ohio” potluck that celebrated local foods. The fact that it went down during the best part of the growing season meant that people were inspired by the farmers markets, and we saw tons of dishes made with super-fresh produce.

An interview with @BeautyNight

My good friend Caroline McGillivray is the founder of Beauty Night , an amazing charitable organization that builds self-esteem in women in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver by providing them with free makeovers. Caroline and I have been good friends for a few years but I never had interviewed her to learn more about Beauty Night, so I fired her a few questions recently. Raul – Caroline, I first knew of Beauty Night even before you and I became friends.

The Little Frenchie

There are many good food trucks out there but I’ve never been such a loyal fan to any of them except for The Little Frenchie , an authentic French truck offers delicious french sandwiches and crepes for a very affordable price. They come to the Hollywood area every Thursday near the CNN building and has been the highlight of the week for me. It’s run by three cute and friendly girls, and I love the hand painted truck very much

Rather Fondue of Walluc Bistro

Walluc Bistro is an unassuming little place sitting on a not so attractive corner off of Shoreditch High Street with a front room barely big enough to accomodate its central rustic wooden dining table. A kitsch mix of alpine ski memorabilia, boxing gloves, random french vintage posters and mismatched furniture seemingly haemmorraged from a Tyrolean car boot sale make this one of the more random fondue places I’ve been to, but perhaps the most charming. I came on my birthday to indulge my love for all things fromage and was not disappointed, except perhaps at the portion sizes.

Event: Goodale Park Music Series 8/1/2010

After a week off for the Jazz and Rib Fest, the Goodale Park Music Series returned in fine form on August 1st, with Yumbambe providing music and the fine folks at Taco Trucks Columbus hosting the potluck portion of the event. We got there a little bit late because the dish I made took a little longer to grill than I estimated – we ended up not getting there until around 12:30 or so – but the primary dish I brought – Yucatan-Marinated Chicken and Shrimp with Grilled Peach Salsa – disappeared in like 5 minutes flat

Popular Indian Dishes

They’re among the most ordered dishes in any Indian restaurant, anywhere in the world. There is in fact, a common joke that says Chicken Tikka Masala is the national dish of the UK!!! With Indian cuisine growing in popularity, foods like Butter Chicken (pictured at right in foreground), Palak Paneer and Rogan Josh are not just well known, they are also well-loved in many homes.

Aberdeen Angus Steak House, Piccadilly Circus

“The act of going to a restaurant when you know it’s going to be shit,” advised Robin Majumdar, one half of the Dos Hermanos blogging crew and someone with more than his fair share of shit restaurant meals behind him, “palls really quickly, believe me.” In all honesty, I could have predicted I wasn’t about to have the meal of my life at the Aberdeen Angus Steak House on Coventry Street on Friday. But my reasons for visiting the restaurant chain with the worst reputation amongst not just regular restaurant goers but Londoners in general, were slightly more complex.
