T his is an accidental recipe full of familiar flavors: too much salt, too much grease, un-soft rice, brinjal/eggplant, lime juice. Funnily enough, some discussion on BT brinjal had me buying two packets of the vegetable, the brinjal part of it, that is, not the BT. They didn’t look oversized or particularly beautiful, which meant that they probably weren’t extra-chemically treated than the other vegetables around them, so I brought them home

R ecently, I failed at making chaaru . Like I had failed with this staple many times in the past, even with ready-to-cook packets and powders that ensured I didn’t have to do anything much. I don’t even attempt the varieties made back home, except for tomato chaaru (rasam), and that’s mostly only when the several shrivelling tomatoes inside the fridge loudly call out to be pressure-cooked into rasam

Watermelon Tomato Cucumber Salad + Cauliflower Tabouleh – New Years Health Standard Process Cleanse Diet (Day 9) It’s now been over a week on the Standard Process cleanse diet and I’m beginning to see the results of the diet. I have a lot more energy, don’t need to eat as much and get great sleep. Adding a few of the RAW recipes from Sarma Melngailis’s Living RAW Food cookbook into the rotation has definitely helped us get over our quickly exhausted excitement of red beet salads , butternut squash and roasted vegetables

We’re in the thick of winter, so I’ve been feeling really out of sorts lately, not able to find much joy in anything, instead biding my time until the sun starts shining again. Some of you may not know this (although most of you do), but I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, and in January and February of most years deal with incapacitating depression – so bad that I rarely leave the house during the winter, and when I do I get extremely anxious and claustrophobic and short tempered. Knowing this, I stay at home as much as possible, depending on the kindness of my wonderful husband to bring the good stuff to me

Not long ago, we dispatched travel blogger Heather Cowper on an anonymous review trip to the enchanting Hotel Heritage Av Liberdade in Portugal’s capital. Not only did she produce a terrific hotel review , but she also gave us a whistle-stop tasting tour of the city’s eats… There are so many things I could tell you about our trip to Lisbon . Maybe fado music, the mournful mixture of folk and blues that is sometimes lively, sometimes sad, with lyrics of longing and lost love and being far from home

I recently had the pleasure to have Phở with my friend and colleague Liv Hung (who blogs at A Beautiful Life ) as we were enjoying a relaxed Saturday afternoon. We were wondering where to eat and came across Pho Hoang (which is a very short walk from my house). We settled for a small plate of Phở as neither of us was really hungry.

Some traditional Korean food which I had since arriving in Seoul… Tteokbokki and Odeng @ Namdaemun Market Popular snack food; had these at a street stall in Namdaemun market. Tteokbokki are sliced rice cakes broiled in sweet-spicy sauce; while Odeng are boiled fish cakes which probably originated from Japan. I’m a big promoter of my neighbourhood, so I’m always looking for stuff that’s happening in Mount Pleasant/Main Street, particularly charity events. I am delighted to hear about The Main Event , taking place from January 18th to 24th. From their website: “The Main Event – East meets West” 2010 will include an array of Main Street’s restaurants, offering three-course tasting menus for set prices of $25, $35 and $45

I was on one of my usual (and delightful) walks with the lovely Emme Rogers when we happened to stumble upon Grub , a relatively new (2009) wine bar/restaurant that I had been wanting to try for a long while. When I first viewed the room (late in 2009) I figured it was another version of Gudrun’s or Salt Tasting Room. I have to admit that it’s probably a combination of both, although the food (from what we heard from the women who were our neighbours at the next table) is apparently excellent and the prices for mains ($ 18-19 apiece) sound in the range of a middle-to-high-end restaurant.

Stewed Pork Rice (鲁肉饭 – pronounced ‘Lu Rou Fan’) is a cheap local staple in Taiwan, which is served almost in every restaurant or food stall you see. The dish is really simple, basically just a small bowl of rice topped with a spoonful of stewed pork. When we visited Jioufen we had a bowl

Teochew Porridge is the ultimate comfort food for a Teochew Ah Hia like myself. Although I would be the first to admit that though I have 100% Teochew DNA, my selection of dishes to accompany my porridge won’t be able to score me a distinction if I were sitting for the entrance exams for admission into the Teochew Huay Kuan. (Association) I grew up eating Teochew Porridge at home with the simple dishes like Chye Poh Omelette, Minced Pork Omelette, Chinese sausage omelette and the canned stuff like Fried Dace and Luncheon Meat.

Go RAW One Luck Ducky Restaurant – New Years Health Standard Process Cleanse Diet (Day 6) I got a little frustrated browsing the vegetarian and vegan cookbook section at Strand because most of the books called for a lot of tofu, seitan and pasta which are all not allowed on the diet.
