Review: Piada Italian Street Food

Depending on who you speak to, it can be argued that the name “Piada Italian Street Food” is a little misleading; after all, with such a bustling and quickly growing street food scene here in Columbus, there’s an almost unwritten expectation that our street food be, you know – actually served on the street , out of a cart, taco truck , or even in an obviously ethnic store front tucked away in an otherwise long forgotten strip mall in what used to be the burbs but are now huge ethnic strongholds.

Pork Stuffed Fried Tofu

We’ve been living at my parent’s house as our kitchen undergoes renovation. Yes, the kitchen re-do is finally under way! While under normal circumstances, I would dread the inconvenience, it just so happens that right now, it’s the best thing for me. If I was my normal, overly busy self I’d be annoyed that my commute to the city is longer.  With morning sickness still lingering, I’ve limited making plans anyway.

In-N-Out Burger Mania = Huh?

In-N-Out Burger busy I am no longer an In-N-Out Burger virgin. When you’re a reporter within the restaurant trade industry, it’s a rare chain whose name you don’t at least recognize. So I’d heard of In-N-Out Burger for years, but it wasn’t until I read Tricia Honea’s blog post here at Uptake on the chain that I had an inkling it was a fast food favorite.

Restaurant Cal Pep – Barcelona, Spain

Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona Recently my niece was talking to us about moving to Spain after she finishes college.  As she told us about her high school exchange program where she spent a month on Majorca , I started to day dream about my last visit to Barcelona . This always happens when the weather finally gets warm in San Francisco, and if we walk by the delicious smells of Contigo while out walking our dog.

Ben Greeno at Tudor Road, Hackney

Of all the strange fads and trends that sweep through the Twittering classes of London, I never thought the concept of the underground restaurant would ever catch on. It seemed like such an odd idea, paying someone to host a dinner party and being forced to make small-talk with a bunch of people you’d never met; and after all, if I wanted to pay £20 for my dinner aren’t there enough overground restaurants in London to take your money, and provide a bigger menu and a nice quiet table for two by the window into the bargain? And yet, persuaded by more open-minded and enthusiastic people than myself (hard to believe such people exist, I know), in March last year I found myself knocking on the door of a handsome Victorian townhouse somewhere in Kilburn, and ushered into the front room of Ms Marmite Lover’s original Underground Restaurant along with 20 or 30 others

Kooper’s Chowhound Burger Wagon wants you to vote early and often

The Kooper’s Chowhound Burger Wagon is in the running to be crowned “America’s Favorite Food Truck.” In order to win, Kooper’s does not actually have to prove that it is the best food truck in America, which it may or may not be. Kooper’s just has to convince enough people to stuff the ballot box. “We have until September 10th, 2010 to collect a maximum of votes to win a chance to represent Baltimore and Maryland in the Season 2 of the Amazing Food Truck Race!” reads the e-mail sent from Kooper’s.

Animal Style: Last night Eater popped by Animal…

Last night Eater popped by Animal for a quick bite and uncovered just the slightest bit of news surrounding Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo’s new restaurant on Third Street . The pair plan to export some of the Animal staff over to the new eatery, and they are also just beginning to hire employees. So, that means, they are probably about three weeks away from opening.

Sizzling Kimchi at ARANG

Arang Korean restaurant/barbecue sits on Golden Square in Soho – a large, spacious cantine-style room with tables lit by what appear to be neon snooker table lamps each of which has an industrial ventilation tube zooming out of it that hovers, Bladrunner style, over your table’s hotplate. The hotplate is the centre of fun at Arang, although by all means do not limit your choices to the barbecue section as the starters, noodle and rice dishes are all worth a go, including a stellar Bi Bim Bap. The staff are smiley and will help you pronounce the tongue twisters on the menu without the sort of patronising glare from l’enfer you might get in a  French restaurant when ordering wine with an English accent, they are also incredibly efficient with food arriving in a smooth and steady flow and every little pot of pickles or dipping sauce explained properly.

Goodson’s Cafe – Tomball, TX

A few years ago, while traveling in Mauritius, I caught an episode of “Deep Fried Paradise” on the Travel Channel.  I found myself captivated – one, that someone would create an entire television show dedicated to deep fried food – had they heard my secret wish for such a thing?  Second, that a restaurant only about 15 miles away from my U.S.
