Former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been invited to keynote the annual convention of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America which 330 member companies through whom 70% of the wines in America are distributed. This is the first time that the convention has chosen someone outside of the wine industry to keynote. Could you imagine Narendra Modi keynoting one of our Indian wine conferences

As Homer Simpson once said, “Sweet, wonderful beer. My love for you will never die.” I believe that many share his sentiment. And those who do probably hold a soft spot in their hearts for some good Belgian beer. Those who visit Bruges may do so to see medieval buildings, take a bike tour or just wander around – but hopefully they’ll also stop and get themselves some good beer.

Chocalate-y, luscious, perfect Sacher Torte. This is the chocolate cake to end all chocolate cakes: spongy chocolate cake, with a light apricot jam in between two layers, topped with a rich chocolate and served with whipped cream. Chances are, if you’ve explored Austria, you’ve seen Sacher Torte on the menu, well, just about anywhere you can eat. And hopefully, if you are in the know, you’ve indulged in a slice.

The Royal McGregor I was the group tour guide during our day in Edinburgh. Of the six of us, I was the one who had been to Scotland and explored the place top to bottom on my own a few years ago, so visiting Edinburgh Castle was old hat to me. I’d heard the tale of Mary Queen of Scots giving birth to King James VI in that little room with no windows

If you think the cold weather is cause for complaint, and the snow’s pretty but starting to get on your nerves, imagine Paris 100 years ago, flooded like you wouldn’t believe. This new exhibition shows some amazing photos and films from the time… © BHVP – Roger-Viollet We shouldn’t keep moaning about the current harsh weather. Imagine Paris underwater, boats in the streets, the Seine high enough to almost flow over its bridges.

It seems good wine and Andrew Steele, GM of Shangri-La’s Tanjung-Aru Resort in Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo (former General Manager of the Shangri-La, New Delhi and founder member of the SI Tasting Panel) go hand in hand. And it is hard not to end up drinking great wines when you visit him

Got a note from Jim Friley in response to this story yesterday: “I noticed in your article yesterday that Big John's Alabama BBQ was listed in the 'Saddest Restaurant Closures.' There is a bright side to that: Big John's family is relocated temporarily (hopefully to be a new location) in South Tampa on Dale Mabry Highway, a little south of Bay to Bay, across from the Howard Johnson's. They are operating under the name of BJ's Alabama BBQ…same family, same great BBQ, same great atmosphere…We in south Tampa are hoping and praying that this location will remain open when the site on 40th Street is resurrected.”

Portsmouth, New Hampshire may not be on most folks’ radar as a great spot to visit. But this revitalized old port town just North of Massachusetts and South of Maine on I-95 is cute, retro and hip all at the same time. It’s a great spot to explore on a day trip during a New England stay. And if you go, you have to have yourself a beer. New England is home to all kinds of great micro-breweries. It’s known for them. And if you fancy a meal with your quaff, you’ll be very happy once you step inside the Portsmouth Brewery

It’s the nearest things we have to a toy museum in the city, and even if it does look blatantly sponsored, how can you resist revisiting your childhood with these adorable characters? This photo by Flickr user 'Another Ashia…' is used under cc licence It’s the first Playmobil exhibition in France (yippee!), 35 years after the brand was started (and since then 2.2 billion little non-biodegradeable blokes have been made. Wow!).
