Time to Talk About Taco Time’s Tortillas

Taco Time choices I had no intention of blogging about Taco Time when I ordered lunch at this fast food counter in the Canada Place food court. Not that I expected it to be bad  — why would a person drop $7.53 intentionally on something she didn’t think she’d like

André Kertész exhibition at the Jeu de Paume from 28th September 2010 – 6th February 2011

The first major European retrospective of the photographer, who died in 1985… André Kertész (Budapest, 1894 – New York, 1985) never saw a comprehensive retrospective of his work presented in Europe during his lifetime, despite having donated all his negatives to the French state. Nevertheless, he is one of the most important photographers of the 20th century for both the quality of his work and the longevity of his career

Austrian wine board targets markets like India

The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB) increased the number of wine buyers visiting its biennial Vienna wine show for the first time by about 100, with a fair representation from new markets such as India. According to Willi Klinger, managing director of The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB), the objective of VieVinum, which takes place every alternate year, is to expand trade.

Andalusian Eats in Cadiz at Bohemia

Goat Cheese on toast for a starter I am not sure why this restaurant is called Bohemia. It does not seem bohemian on the outside or on the inside, and instead resembles a typical Spanish family-run restaurant, with minimal frills and delicious entrees. It was the fresh fish that caught our attention when we walked past Bohemia

Early chains: John R. Thompson

Although it is largely forgotten today, the Chicago-based John R. Thompson company was one of the largest “one arm” lunchroom chains of the early 20th century. We so strongly associate fast food chains with hamburgers that it may be surprising to learn that Thompson’s popular sandwiches included Cervelat, smoked boiled tongue, cold boiled ham, hot frankfurter, cold corned beef, cold salmon, and Herkimer County cheese, served on “Milwaukee Rye Bread” baked by the chain’s bakery.

Apèritif à la Française at the Shangri-La, New Delhi

The night of June 3 saw the seventh edition of Apèritif à la Française, a celebration of the French heritage of food and drink, lifestyle and culture. The theme for this year’s festival was ‘Celebrating Conoisseurship’ and by the spread of quality cheese, chocolate, pastries and wines, it seemed that no expense had been spared to ensure that everyone who attended did indeed celebrate.

Anatomy of a restaurateur: Mary Alletta Crump

Because she ran a tea room, Mary Alletta “Crumpey” Crump (pictured, age 31) actually would not have called herself a restaurateur. She made a distinction between a tea room and a restaurant: the former served light food, mainly lunch and afternoon tea, while a restaurant served heavy food and was open for dinner. Not so for The Crumperie.

Golden Corral Famous for Its All You Can Eat Buffet in Indianapolis

Busy in motion When we last left off on the job search report, our friend had landed a job as the cashier at Golden Corral instead of a position with Greek’s Pizzeria . In theory, I don’t have a problem with  GC as we lovingly call it. Yes, it’s a buffet, and therefore the food is prepared and served in volume.

Taste – The Hague, Netherlands

I love a good wine bar.  Really, I do.  But I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to most. And what might that be?  Just that most wines on the list are only available by the bottle.  If you are looking to sample or just have a glass of a favorite (and sometimes pricey) vintage, you are just out of luck, my friend.  You are forced to purchase the entire bottle – perhaps getting something that is not to your taste or that just gives you a serious cramp in your wallet.  It’s kind of a bummer

Farm-Style Fare at the Iowa Machine Shed Restaurant

If there’s one thing Iowan’s know, it’s food.  We’ve been  living the whole “buy local” lifestyle since before it became a foodie buzzword.  It comes from our self-sustaining rural lifestyle.  Another thing we know is that hard work deserves a good meal.  And though few of us toil in the fields day in and day out a farm-style meal is well worth the extra calories every once in a while. When we’re craving comfort food we head to the Iowa Machine Shed Restaurant in Des Moines.  With the tag line: “ A Restaurant Honoring the American Farmer ®” it’s definitely not an “upscale” sort of place; the waitstaff wear bib overalls and you’ll enjoy your drink out of a Mason jar.  But the food is fresh, the portions are large enough to share and the surroundings are “down home”

2010 Paris Film Festival from 3rd – 13th July 2010

After years of looking a bit weedy compared to Cannes (admittedly the biggest film festival in the world), the Paris Film Festival (otherwise knows as Paris Cinéma) seems to gain strength every year. For the 2010 edition there will be some high-profile guests (Jane Fonda – now 72!, M

Todaro’s and the Stuffed Pizza

Todaro's Pizza in Clemson I remember back in college when I had my first stuffed piece of pizza. Let me remind you that I’m not talking about Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza, but an entire stuffed pizza. That’s a layer of pizza crust, toppings, and then another layer of crust

Antico Caffe’ Greco, Rome, Italy – Classic Italian Coffee House

Rome's most famous coffee house Antico Caffe’ Greco is a famous coffee house near the Piazza di Spagna or Spanish Steps in Rome.  Since 1760 it has seen many internationally famous writers and poets like Keats, D’Annunzio and Goethe sitting at its tables. This is my favorite kind of place to visit on vacation, especially in Italy . No matter what the exchange rate, a cup of coffee anywhere in the world can be one of your least expensive but most memorable moments on your trip
