After a mini-scandal two years ago, and slightly later than initially programmed (the whole thing was supposed to be finished for December 2009) Daniel Buren ’s iconic and controversial installation at Palais Royal (you know, the stripy columns thing) will be inaugurated this week after a long – and expensive – renovation project. photos : JasonW For as long as I have been visiting Paris and living here (over 20 years), I have regularly visited the intriguing Buren columns at Palais Royal. Placed in what used to be a car park, the 3,000m² listed courtyard was transformed in 1986 with ‘modern’ installation art made up of 260 different columns, two streams and special coloured lighting at night

Appetite City As someone who has spent years researching the history of restaurants I can give no higher praise than to say “I couldn’t have done it better myself.” That is my appraisal of William Grimes’ Appetite City: A Culinary History of New York (Farrar, Straus and Giroux/North Point Press), a book I highly recommend to anyone interested in the history of both restaurants and New York City. And, though I might have matched the book’s exhaustive research, I doubt I could have written it so engagingly. I appreciate Grimes’ level gaze and ability to sidestep the hype that has always surrounded New York restaurants, even as far back as 1825 when a journalist insisted that New York rivaled Paris with its “consummate institutions for cultivating the noble science of gastronomy.” Grimes’ response: “New York a rival of Paris?

Today’s specials: books on restaurants
All things considered, the best restaurants that this country has produced probably have been unpretentious, inexpensive, high-volume eateries located close to sources of fresh food. In 19th-century New York City’s Smith & McNell’s, across from the booming Washington Market, was a leading example of the type. Its patronage came largely from dealers, farmers, and customers who worked and shopped at the market.

Autumn 2009 looks pretty exciting at the French Cinematheque, with a cycle of films by Fellini, the Nouvelle Vague presented by the actors from the era, a retrospecive of Michael Haneke, and most of all the Magic Lanterns and Painted Film exhibition which shows hidden treasures dating from 1659 up to the early 20th Century… Paris is paradise for cinema lovers, and the Cinematheque never fails to rise to meet our consequently high expectations. After the great Jacques Tati exhibition, Magic Lanterns and Painted Film – 400 Years of Cinema is presented in collaboration with the National Cinema Museum of Torino, and contains a selection of the 23,000 slides held in the French and Italian collections

Mexican, Mexican, Mexican. That’s all we get around here in Northern California. I’m not complaining about Mexican food here. I love Chile Verde, Carnitas, Huevos Rancheros, et al . Our family eats so much Mexican food that we’re at least 15% Mexican by now. At least. But this week I went Puerto Rican on your ass! Palomilla Encebollado My friend and fellow Foodie, Dave, suggested that I try the new Puerto Rican restaurant in Santa Rosa, El Coqui . He had heard good things. So my husband “Captain America” met me for lunch courtesy of Uptake.com. We encountered a busy little restaurant buzzing with action and packed with customers in the middle of the day. We were greeted by the owner’s son and seated by the counter. I want to tell you about the weird poker machine at the end of the bar and the patron that sat there playing virtual cards and chowing down on PR food. It was surreal

You go to Paris for the culture, the food and, yes, the museums. But the thing that they don’t tell you is that the museum bit can be exhausting . The Louvre is the size of a small country – and since you’re likely to get lost a time or two as you meander its grand halls, you’ll be sure to get in your daily recommended 10,000 steps and then some. I walked that place until my feet literally bled. And though the Musee D’Orsay can’t compare in terms of square footage, it’s still involves a serious walking commitment. And, of course, a high probability of getting lost, too. It just can’t be helped. But there are ways to re-charge and sustain yourself as you explore this incredible museum. And my favorite way to do so? Heading to the museum’s Cafe des Hauteurs on the third floor for some caffeine and sustenance of your choice

Jody Mace , author of the Charlotte on the Cheap blog , knows both a good deal and good BBQ. And so when asked to share her favorite restaurant, she didn’t hesitate to tell me about Old Hickory House , a Charlotte mainstay located on Tryon Street. “Just drive down the road and you’ll experience it before you even walk in,” she says. “There’s just this smell that gets into your car, this sort of sweet and smoky smell that grabs your attention. And once you smell it, you really have no choice. You just have to turn into Old Hickory House.” Mace says that this barn-shaped, farm-decorated restaurant has been around just about forever. And though Georgians may be familiar with the Old Hickory Houses down Atlanta way, this one is not part of the same chain. And the food, according to Mace, is to die for.

Created by Groupe F, the artists behind the year 2000 firework display at the Eiffel Tower, this interpretation of a work by Cyrano de Bergerac should be impressive stuff… and with only 6 showings, you might like to reserve your ticket in advance… Cyrano’s The Comic History of the Other World, States and Empires of the Moon, States and Empires of the Sun is a 17 th century precursor of science fiction. It tells of an imaginary world that occasionally makes contact with our own: on a trip to the Moon – and later the Sun – the narrator Dyrcona has adventures both cosmic and comical, providing the starting point for this performance. The figure of Dyrcona, who tells his tale “in letters of fire”, is the focal point for five voyages of exploration which revisit Versailles through the eyes of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Olive Garden It’s quite refreshing to pick up your laptop and read about a success in the casual dining world today. “In a challenging economic environment where consumers have reduced their dining out frequency and there was a significant amount of competitive discounting, our brands performed much better than the industry,” said Clarence Otis, Chairman and CEO of Darden , when announcing its 2009 fiscal results. “…Our organization is able to respond to consumers’ needs in both up and down markets because we have talented and dedicated teams in our restaurants and restaurant support center, and they are passionate about providing guests with outstanding experiences that include excellent value and high levels of service
