More like "New Lame City" Geography

Queens was the most popular answer and showed up on a number of different lines in the same round, never the right answer; I was informed that it was not necessarily intended to be an answer but instead a statement about the category. Needless to say we didn’t have too many New Yorkers in the crowd this week. Who was in-crowd this week: They were determined

Geeks ‘R’ Good Enough

After two weeks away from my Quizmaster post, I was happy to return from the wilds of suburban Pennsylvania and get down to some serious quizzing, and apparently the Hound was itchin’ for a good mental challenge, as well. We had a bar so full of quizzers that they eventually overflowed the toilets. I’m guessing the plumbing troubles kicked in because someone’s extra brain power had to be disposed of in a controlled environment and the pipes just couldn’t contain it.

How to Tackle Rome, Italy

Rome is known for its many wonders: the history, the food, the scooters, cobblestone streets and cats sleeping amongst 2,000 year-old ruins. But Rome is still haunted, and rightly so, by an Italian reputation – an inefficient bureaucratic nightmare, if you don’t know your way around (and sometimes even if you do!). Here are some useful tips for tourists and expats alike that will come in very handy when navigating Italian society as whole, and Rome in particular

19 million people who can bite me.

After the way I carried on, where did you think I was gonna go with the headline? Anyway, it’s fitting that two duos made it into the top three, since the only good thing ever to come from NYC is They Might Be Giants.* The Camel-Tones and The Generals finished second and third, respectively, proving that you don’t always need a lot of people to rack up a lot of points

EaterWire: Angel’s Opens, the Golden Ticket Giveaway, Willy Wonka Screening Tonight

SANTA MONICA — Less than a month ago new signage was spotted at the old Holly’s West location and according to Urban Daddy , Angel’s is now open. Touted as a piano bar and supper club, Angel’s (from the owners of Temple Bar, Zanzibar, Little Temple and Townhouse) was inspired by “hangouts of the 1930s and ’40s” so expect a dimly lit bar with red and cream hues, plush seating, and live music

Coultier stomps Bedrock and Dane Cook mocks while the T-Rex breeds Cock.

While Michael is gone to do God-knows-what, I was sent from miles away to come play the foreman of the quietest trivia night in all of south Texas. A pseudo-crowded house played with the decibel level of a bare bar, leaving things rowdyless and productive. A gentle love of a large assortment of beer and a healthy respect for the fellow teams kept me from doing my standard yelling at drunks to calm down and actually forced me to, get this, read questions

Salon on the DIY, Urban Homesteading, Canning, Pickling Craze

File under worth reading: In Salon today, Sarah Karnasiewicz’s deconstruction of the crafty, urban homesteading trend –she deftly points out that, unless you have a giant garden, this is not your grandmother’s thrifty canning, but actually a luxury hobby. Because the truth no one tells you is that while canning and pickling and curing your own (locally grown, organic) food may be many things — rewarding, sustainable, health-conscious, creative and challenging, even — one thing it ain’t is cheap

Week In Reviews

Pig’s ears are the hot topic today as Jonathan Gold’s tackles downtown new(ish)comer Church & State , declaring chef Walter Manzke’s pig’s ears the best he has ever tried. But the restaurant didn’t start off with high accolades. Headed by the original chef “the food was predictably less accomplished than the vibe,” but since Manzke took over the kitchen, the “artists’ brasserie” has become an establishment that, for one, SIV gave a three-star review in March

More Bosco Facts Uncovered

The day before yesterday, we posted a rather unsatisfying partial account of the discovery of Bosco by a Camden physician, and even though we still don’t know that physician’s name, more facts about the beverage, called by Cosmo Kramer, “your dark master,” are gradually emerging. Fork in the Road’s Albany correspondent, Jan Galligan , offers the following miscellany: I remember a grade school version of the BOSCO song that we used to sing on the playground…[editor's note: in Kenosha, Wisconsin] I LOVE BOSCO THAT’S THE DRINK FOR ME MOMMY PUT’S IT IN MY MILK – TO TRY TO POISON ME.

Suomenlinnan Panimo Brewery Restaurant – Helsinki, Finland

Exploring Suomenlinna is like stepping back in time.  This small island off the coast of Helsinki, Finland is home to the city’s famous Sveaborg sea fortress.  And Suomenlinna is also home to Panimo, a great brewery restaurant that serves fantastic food and even better local-brewed beer. After walking around the island for a few hours, we had worked up quite a hunger.  And, yes, a thirst, too.  A little overcome by sun, I opted for the popular UpCider Pear Cider over ice – a Finnish staple – to cool off.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the drink looked a bit more like lemonade than an adult beverage – but the cool, crisp taste of the pear was the perfect antidote to a morning of heavy walking. My husband, however, opted for a few of Panimo’s brews.  He started with the Coyet Ale, a nice, smooth almost-British-like ale.  He said it hit the spot but he was curious about some of the other brews.  He then chose the Hoepken Pils to have with his meal

The Early Word: Piccola Cucina

The 22-seater that recently opened in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Tina on Prince Street is helmed by Philip Guardione, who cut his teeth under Sergio Mei at the Four Seasons in Milan, but learned much of what he knows and loves about food in his native Sicily. The dining room at Piccola is so, well, piccola that the wait staff have to take a detour outside to serve the far corner tables.

Keith with a horn, Naomi in "Corn", and Bruno Does Porn.

Last week’s traffic jam of 20+ teams turned into a cozy, 13 team Sunday drive when fear of a little rain, rain which didn’t fall, scared off a few of the less dedicated teams at home allowing the truly determined to fight for a place among the Sonterra elite. With only two points separating the ninth place team from third, proper joker placing and horror knowledge was more crucial than most weeks

I Like Short Walks That End on the Ground :)

It just seemed to be one of those nights where everyone was in a romantic summer mood …Of course, others were just horny: horny for booze and brain games! Holla! There is always a sense of excitement on the patio even though we all know what’s going to happen. Every Tuesday, we meet up with our Rockslide family and bang out a couple hours of Q & A, but at the base of it all is an overwhelming feeling of connection that is never lost on yours truly. The enjoyment is as perpetual as can be on Tuesdays; in fact, Thomas Pynchon and Gravity’s rainbow would stare into the motion of our madness with jealous eyes; longing for that never-ending energy.

Good News/Bad News: Gus & Gabriel

[ Krieger , 6/29/09] Upper West Side : It’s been just over a week since Greek superstar Michael Psilakis opened his take on a gastropub with Gus & Gabriel in the former Kefi space. The place has been getting buzz ever since Psilakis announced he was opening the place back in February, mostly because the restaurant marks a complete departure for him. The reviews have been pouring in and so far it’s a pretty mixed bag
