A Gallery of Burger King’s Classiest Ads

Burger King is really on a roll, having managed to offend Hindus and Mexicans, plus anyone who dislikes stupidly overt blow job jokes, in a matter of months. The latest, depicting the Hindu goddess Lakshmi perched on top of what looks like a ham and cheese sandwich, plays on the goddess’ usual pose on a lotus flower. The ad is extra special because Hindus never mix meat and religious practice–even those who usually eat meat might go veg for a holy day, and most priests are vegetarian

More Bosco Facts Uncovered

The day before yesterday, we posted a rather unsatisfying partial account of the discovery of Bosco by a Camden physician, and even though we still don’t know that physician’s name, more facts about the beverage, called by Cosmo Kramer, “your dark master,” are gradually emerging. Fork in the Road’s Albany correspondent, Jan Galligan , offers the following miscellany: I remember a grade school version of the BOSCO song that we used to sing on the playground…[editor's note: in Kenosha, Wisconsin] I LOVE BOSCO THAT’S THE DRINK FOR ME MOMMY PUT’S IT IN MY MILK – TO TRY TO POISON ME.

The Early Word: Piccola Cucina

The 22-seater that recently opened in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Tina on Prince Street is helmed by Philip Guardione, who cut his teeth under Sergio Mei at the Four Seasons in Milan, but learned much of what he knows and loves about food in his native Sicily. The dining room at Piccola is so, well, piccola that the wait staff have to take a detour outside to serve the far corner tables.

Battle of the Dishes: Taiwanese Pork Chop Over Rice

Left: Wah Mei’s pork chop over rice; Right: Hua Ji’s version of the same This week’s Battle of the Dishes pits two renditions of Taiwanese fried pork chop over rice against each other–one from Wah Mei Pork Chop Fast Food and the other from Hua Ji Pork Chop Fast Food. Obviously, both establishments specialize in pork chops, but they also offer other Taiwanese fast foods, like black pepper chicken leg over rice, fried noodles, noodle soups, and fusion-ish pastas with pork chops or chicken leg. Hua Ji is newer than Wah Mei, and looks it

Under Review–Sietsema at Watty & Meg; DiGregorio at Pho Sure

This week in the Voice , Our Man Sietsema finds shrimp in his mash at Watty & Meg ; while Sarah DiGregorio samples the pun-filled menu at Pho Sure . Bruni pays a visit to Aldea, where he feels that George Mendes’ “usually intelligent, intriguing and highly skilled work is undercut at times by a tendency to overwork his dishes,” but that overall, the restaurant is “something of a deal.” [ NY Times ] Alan Richman also drops in Aldea and is decidedly more enthusiastic, deeming it “one of Manhattan’s best new restaurants,” where he “admire(s) everything about it, except the wine-by-the-glass prices.” [ GQ @ men.style.com ] Adam Platt accuses Michael White of overkill at Marea, adding that, “For all its impressive, even dazzling qualities, it feels less like a labor of love than like one of ambition and duty.” [ NY Magazine ] Restaurant Girl applauds the exorcism of what was Ago and is now Locanda Verde, praising Andrew Carmellini’s cooking as ” thoughtful and imaginative,” despite a few “frustrating” blunders.

Bruni Picks His Top (New) Pizza Pies; Could An Aussie Be the One to Save Bluefin Tuna?

First Alan Richman listed his faves, then we did ours, and now Bruni is getting in on the pizza judging action. Looking only at pizza places that have opened since 2004, he deems Motorino’s Pugliese pie “a masterpiece,” but “got almost no pleasure from the soggy pies at Keste.” [ NY Times ] Meryl Streep and Amy Adams reveal how much they ate during the filming of Julie and Julia in the August issue of Ladies’ Home Journal . Apparently Streep “gained 15 pounds,” in her portrayal of Julia Child, while Adams “ate a lot!” Director Nora Ephron made sure everyone ate for real in the scenes

Incredibly Cheap Eats–Tlacoyos

I wrote about El Centenario Grocery and Deli back when it really was a grocery and deli , with just a counter in the rear where a lone, hardworking cook turned out reliable Mexican standards, including great barbacoa tacos. Walking by the other day, I peeked inside and was surprised to find that all the shelves have been taken out, and the space completely remade into a restaurant

Seems Like Everyone Is Losing Their White Castle Virginity These Days

Mere weeks after Sarah DiGregorio lost her White Castle virginity , A Hamburger Today has also popped its WC cherry . The AHT deflowering did not result in the same kind of class war that broke out on Fork in the Road, however. While most readers of that blog expressed either mild disgust or nostalgic affection for the grayish, holey sliders, no one was up in arms over the “elitism” of never having eaten a White Castle slider.

Introducing the 1:1:1–Thomas Waugh of Death & Co.’s Response to the 12-Ingredient Cocktail

If you’re a true cocktail enthusiast, you’ve sure had the experience of sitting around waiting for a drink for 20 minutes, dying of thirst and sobriety because that extra eighth of an ounce of Maraschino liqueur or Green Chartreuse or Punt e Mes plus two different kinds of gin and three different kinds of bitters are what’s going to make all the difference in the glass. The era of the 12-ingredient cocktail may not be coming to an end anytime soon, but some bartenders are aiming to simplify their drinks

Cookbook Tester–The Essential Cocktail by Dale DeGroff

Chantal is heading to Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans tomorrow, so you can look forward to insider stories of the cocktailarati. To kick off a boozy week, a test run of Dale DeGroff’s book The Essential Cocktail seemed appropriate. DeGroff is often known as the King of Cocktails, the guy who started the renaissance that changed bar culture so much that now, no matter where you are in the city, you’re probably only a short walk away from a properly mixed drink.

Coke & Pepsi Tweeting Pals

The cola wars took an interesting turn last week when Coke and Pepsi became friends (or, rather, followers of each other) on Twitter. The friendly Tweeting between the two giants came as a result of Aussie web company Amnesia Razorfish ‘s experiment to try to get them to connect. Coke initiated the connection with “A gracious (but competitive) hello” and Pepsi responded.

Under the Toque–JoeDoe Chef Clashes with Blogs; Jean-Georges Posts His Defense on His Blog

Eater, Grub Street, NY Journal, and Joe Dobias of JoeDoe were embroiled in a melee this past week when Dobias lashed out at NY Journal “and other shithead bloggers” for posting a negative review of his restaurant. When Eater picked up the story, Dobias shifted his disdain to that blog, although he does like Grub Street, he says. [ Grub Street] Joe Dobias wasn’t the only chef talking after a bad review.
