Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race! If you have missed the biggest scandal of the summer, let us catch you up: The earliest known haggis recipe has been discovered an 1615 English cookbook, and now claims are being made that haggis, that oats-and-offal pudding cooked in a sheep’s stomach, is not Scottish, but British in origin. Former haggis-maker of the year Robert Patrick, told the Guardian that “”I am sure the customers will be as upset as me to think that England will steal our recipe.” (Read the comments on that article for a closer look into the psyche of haggis partisans.) And today, there’s an op-ed in the New York Times by Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith, claiming that the very notion that haggis was invented by the English is ridiculous

EVGrieve reports that Deputy Inspector Dennis Dequatro, commanding officer of the Ninth Precinct, met with residents from the neighborhood last night to hear their quality-of-life grievances about living near the hotel. Cooper Square has called for its own meeting with the precinct following visits from the NYPD, State Liquor Authority, Health Department, and other agencies on July 2 that resulted in several citations.

dyobmit/flickr Yesterday, a New York Times article about this Sunday’s Bike to the Bars ride to various Brooklyn and Manhattan bars raised a question: “…seriously, no good beer in Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island?” Jimmy Carbone, owner of Jimmy’s No. 43 and one of the creators of the Good Beer Seal and a ride organizer, tells Fork in the Road that it’s nothing personal. “We really just started this month,” he says of the Good Beer Seal gang’s efforts to recognize establishments that serve high-quality suds; so far, there are 15 of them

Last night, the good folks behind Spirited Cocktails attended an American Whiskey tasting at Louis 649 where LeNell Smothers announced that she’s leaving New York for Mexico. Since losing the lease on LeNell’s Wine & Spirits Boutique in Red Hook earlier this year, Smothers had denied numerous rumors that she was moving to London or Amsterdam, maintaining she was looking for another storefront somewhere in the city. But in the video on the Spirited Cocktails site, Smothers clearly states that “I’m moving to Mexico and hoping to open a cocktail bed and breakfast-type thing, very small and intimate.” After Smothers opened her store in 2003, it became a destination for spirits lovers, particularly those in thrall to its impressive bourbon selection

Sony Pictures On Monday, Publishers Weekly cooked up a stir with an article in which Julia Child’s famed editor, Judith Jones, recounted what Child said of Julie & Julia ‘s Julie Powell: “I don’t think she’s a serious cook.” Slashfood tracked down Jones at her Vermont home to follow up on the comment, and now has posted an interview with the longtime Knopf editor, who helped craft Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking . Jones elaborated on her earlier remarks, telling Slashfood, “people are curious about what Julia thought of Julie.

When Tribeca’s Province Canteen closed, many were disappointed–not because the place’s mantao sandwiches were as traditional as they are at, say, Andy’s in Rego Park, or as impeccably sourced as the those at Momofuku, but because the place offered a wide range of flavorful, spicy, unusual sandwiches that could be eaten singly as a snack, or doubly as a meal. Luckily, Province Canteen has resurfaced as Mantao Chinese Sandwiches, in the relative culinary no-mans land of 53rd Street and Second Avenue. The heart of the menu remains the sandwiches, but dumplings, noodles, and soup are also offered

After the Australian paper The Age ran an interview yesterday with a man purporting to be the real Max Brenner, much head-scratching ensued. After all, the owners of Max Brenner, the chocolate shop chain with two locations in New York, had previously claimed there was no Max Brenner, also known as the Bald Man. Instead, the Israeli marketing men behind the chain, Oded Brenner and Max Fichtman, told New York Magazine that their company’s mascot was merely a composite of their names.
