Although they do not play as important of a role in much of the developed world, farmers markets do provide a sense of connection to the communities that we live in. Step inside the plaza of a local farmers market and you will find a wealth of informa

Any serious barbeque chef worth their “five alarm” basting sauce not only knows how important the ingredients are, but also counts on their cooking equipment to measure up to expectations, each and every time.Hard work goes into preparing succulent, mouthwatering beef and pork barbeques. Before the advent of an outdoor kitchen this meant that many serious backyard chefs had to rent, borrow or, perhaps, even buy heavy-duty kitchen equipment to handle the task. It also required choosing a suitable

Visitors to the FIJI photo booth at the 2009 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen I was told that the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen was the biggest and best epicurean event in the U.S., and now I know why. Not only were all the top chefs in attendance, but there were huge crowds at every grand tasting session, cooking demonstration and wine seminar – even during the rainy afternoon session on Saturday. Chef Mario Batali stops by FIJI Water’s photo booth.

When was the last time you started your car and consciously thought about the internal combustion engine involved? Or how often do you eat and enjoy a meal without knowing the way it was prepared or the origin of all its ingredients? Or more technically, do you ever think about the processes involved to make Wifi work? Probably not until the router goes down. While each of these examples could be studied in great detail and are, it is not necessary to fully understand their intricate operati

if you’re planning a special occasion even if it’s a low key or relatively informal affair like a Masterchef prepared meal in your own home, a relaxed summer garden party, a barbecue for friends or maybe a birthday with a Hog Roast to more lavish exercises such as themed weddings or civil partnership receptions for hundreds of guests in a marquee, then using outside catering makes a great deal of sense. Some venues like hotels will offer catering services as part of an all-inclusive package, e

Fans of Top Chef are familiar with the infamous “Vending Machine Quickfire Challenge”, in which competing chefs must make a dish using ingredients taken from a standard vending machine. This new Blog takes a similar idea in a slightly different direction. Fast food from McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Burger King, White Castle and more are deconstructed and rebuilt into works of edible art, with full instructions provided for the courageous. Written by Chris Perrin I know this all sounds harsh. Still, I can’t help but wonder if the Food Network is turning out too many new shows at once. The chefs seem ill at ease behind the camera, the production values reminded my wife of a high school television channel, and the editing is jerky with odd sounding voice… Original story at Edible TV . So far, it's a quiet week on the campaign trail. Not like the last weeks and months which were chock full of fun: petitioning, street fairs, LGBT parades, Howard Dean showing up in Park Slope and endorsing two candiates in the same race, forums, Superfund discussions, and more. But the petitioning continues and for David Pechefsky, Green Party candidate in the 39th, it is just beginning

CityZen’s butter poached lobster photos by the Dapper Diner Five Bites just got its first three-peat! The Dapper Diner, who chimed in on Five Bites in September and again in February , is back to share more delicious dishes — but sadly, he’s left us. “To celebrate finding a new job and moving back home to California, I stopped by a few of my usual faves in DC before leaving,” he wrote. “DC offers a chance at amazing dining without the pretentiousness you get at other cities that are more well-known for their dining.” Here’s the latest culinary tour

I’m not a fan of many of the food shows on TV. This is largely because not many of them are really about food – Come Dine With Me, although wildly popular, is really just a reality TV concept where the eating is secondary to gimmicks, The Hairy Bakers is a show made purely because someone at the BBC likes the title, and Ready Steady Cook has Antony Worrall Thompson in it

Browsing through some storage space in Rockwell, I chanced upon a magazine that at first glance looked like some overstuffed pretentious fodder. But closer inspection of the cover revealed caricatures of accomplished chefs.January 2009 issue of Cuisine and Wine Asia captivated me from cover to cover. I was able to glean some great recipes, and got first look, albeit remotely, on the famed The Big

THERE are still plenty of apples in season and, if you can get your hands on a few blackberries, these two ingredients work incredibly well with creme brulee – thick, creamy custard with a little bit of sharp cooked apple makes a perfect combination. This recipe is slightly similar to some that you may have encountered in the past, but I have added a couple of leaves of gelatine which makes it set just perfectly.ŠThe leaves of gelatine are readily available in most good supermarkets nowadays but, if you are unable to find them, use about ½ tsp powdered gelatine, which should do the trick

The other night, we had breakfast for dinner, as I’m sure a lot of families do from time to time. Daddy just needed a little coffee……Mom wanted eggs, and the kids just wanted pancakes……..”Banana Pancakes, Daddy!” So I continue to fulfill my duties as short order cook for the night ( Gimme’ an Adam and Eve, on a Raft, and a Heart Attack on Rack ), and Xavier exclaims that he wanted another egg. “Can I make it, Daddy?” So we go through the whole process of making a “sunny-side-up” egg, his favorite.
