EaterWire: Samosa House Hits Culver City, New Signage at Holly’s West, Kay ‘n Dave’s Opens

CULVER CITY — Per local buzz, signs for a new Samosa House location in Culver City have popped up at the intersection of Washington and Overland in the vacated space that once housed Winchell’s Donuts (and, inexplicably, signs for a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the interim which never came into fruition).

Torontos Eco Eats

In a city focused on reducing waste (for obvious reasons) what is your favourite Eco-friendly lunch or take-out spot? I thought today’s discussion really should address the biggest concern people have about the strike by Toronto’s city workers – the garbage pile up. It’s a little shocking, perhaps, to be talking garbage on a food site, but the truth is that for every napkin used, every potato peeled, every 2-item combo on noodles ordered there is an increasing pile of garbage and we are responsible for it.

Uncle Gen’s Hong Kong Cuisine: The latest stall to make it to the Really Must Try list!

Hong Kong Steamed Rice with Chicken and Salted Fish $3.30 As the number of blog posts approaches the one thousand mark, it amazes me that there are still so many new places that are still waiting to be discovered. Indeed, Singapore might be a tiny red dot, but if the world atlas were drawn according to the number of great eats, I reckon we should at least be the size of a one dollar coin.

Hapa Kitchen Paris of East Supper Club Dinner Party Brooklyn June 2009

Hapa Kitchen Paris of East Supper Club Dinner Party Brooklyn June 2009 On Tuesday, my friends and I attended a French Quarter Shanghainese themed dinner party in a secret loft space in Ft Greene Brooklyn, and what better hosts for an East meets West dinner than the half-Asian cofounders of Hapa Kitchen : former Momofuku cook Akiko Moorman and Not Eating Out in NY’s Cathy Erway (pictured on right below)?! Not new to the underground supper club scene, Hapa Kitchen has thrown previous events at BKLYN Yard and a lavish dinner party on location at an organic farm in Queens.

Week In Reviews: Jonathan Gold takes a break…

Jonathan Gold takes a break this week from the dives to try the newish Bottega Louie in downtown. He declares that the restaurant/cafe/bar/marketplace “aims to be all things to all people,” and “its ambitions tend to be more cultural than culinary.” Nonetheless, he still deems the restaurant a “more or less” success , despite the fact that “many of the dishes lack the detail or two that would transform” them

Week In Reviews: 8 oz. Burger Bar Snags 1.5 Stars

Back again this week, Irene opts, like last week, to try out another recession-friendly restaurant, this time it’s Govind Armstrong’s 8 oz. Burger Bar . It’s all about deals and steals, like the “well-crafted” $8 cocktails, the “well-chosen and well-priced” beer list, and the oversized “trio of sliders and suds for $16.” Interestingly enough, SIV’s burger critique falls simply into a one line sentence where she describes the signature burger by saying “the bun is just right, not too squishy, the patty thick and juicy,” though the burgers tend to be a bit overcooked so she suggests to “ask for it rare if you’re hankering after a medium-rare burger.” As far as other menu items, SIV’s guests all gave a “thumbs-down” to the fried pickles, but she liked their “cool acidity against the warm, crunchy batter,” in addition to the “deliciously greasy” stout-battered onion rings.

Eater Tracking: Xooro Opening, The Hideout, Bistro LQ, Elements Kitchen plus MORE!

WeHoish: Tomorrow Xooro’s second location officially opens on Melrose. The Spanish fritter shop specializes in a glorified churro filled and/or topped with sugary confections like Nutella, dulce de leche, and lemon cream. New flavors exclusively available at the Melrose location include banananut, macadamia, and triple chocolate, and a line of savory churros drops in a few weeks.

Canon-ieat Food Photography Workshop for Home Econs Teachers

I was invited to conduct a photography workshop for the Association of Home Economics Teachers last Friday and managed to visit NIE for the first time. Gosh it looks a lot like army barracks as it is situated right at the periphery of Singapore where there is no HDB housing between it and the sea! Anyway it was good to see that the Home Econs teachers are now teaching photography as part of the course

Plywood Report: The Fifth Amendment Alehouse, Egg Plant, Townhouse, MORE!

Santa Monica: Last week Tasting Table mentioned that Evergreen Tea House had shuttered and was slated to be replaced this summer by The Fifth Amendment Ale House on Broadway in Santa Monica. Though we don’t have too many details, we do know the eatery will serve beer and wine. [Tasting Table] The Valley: In November we noted that izakaya resto Yuta in Studio City had closed after about one year of biz

Canon-ieat Food Photography Workshop III Winners

Thanks to all the participants who came to the Photography workshop. I think we all managed pick up some tips as well as to eat some quite unique Dim Sum. This particular workshop was slightly different as our participants were also given the opportunity to practise their photography skills in taking photos of people as well as food, not to mention landscape photos since we were at the top of UOB Plaza

Yong Huat revisited: Fried Mee Sua and Fried Bee Hoon!

Fried Mee Sua with extra ingredients $5 It is heartening to find that some hawkers don’t yet seem to have heard the Health Promotion Board’s plea for less oil and more vegetables. Now, please, if you have a cholesterol problem, do cut down on all the lard and oily stuff and please stop reading this post as it will lead you to temptation. But if you can afford it and wish to pamper yourself every now and again, then here is where you can find a hawker who doesn’t prioritise health over taste.

Si Chuan Tea House: Tian Fu Tea House High Tea Video Log

I have started to develop an interest in Chinese Tea appreciation and was happy to find a restaurant that serves Chinese High Tea which pairs dim sum with different types of Chinese Tea. In the video, I interview Linda of Tian Fu Teahouse which is located at the top UOB Plaza. She will be introducing some aspects of the tea ceremony and talk about some unique dim sum dishes served at Tian Fu Teahouse

Port Credit Farmers Market

by Guest Market Blogger Jeff Gignac It was with great anticipation and excitement that made sure I woke up early for the Grand Opening of the Port Credit Farmers Market.  I am a fan of farmers markets and have been to a number of them before but this one is special because it is close to my home in Port Credit.  Although it could be considered small by market standards (there will be more vendors added each week), it is perfect for Port Credit. First stop was the Mississauga Waterfront Festival tent and gather some information on the Festival coming next weekend, which is great fun with lots of things going on for kids, families and adults.  Today, the Port Credit BIA and Lions Club sponsored a free BBQ so my son Patrick and I started by enjoying a nice hot dog and drink.  With our tummy’s full, we went to the Port Credit Farmers Market tent and picked up a T-shirt and Port Credit Farmers Market re-useable bag.  The bag is a great size for not only the items we picked up here, but for shopping at many of the shops in Port Credit as well as our weekly shopping (women apparently love the bag because it’s bright green and hard to lose – not that I get that).  My kids did not want their face painted but many other kids did.
